NYRR Group Training

Welcome to NYRR Group Training, with sessions for runners in all five boroughs of New York City.

Geared toward runners of all levels, from newcomers to experienced competitive racers, these workouts offer coaching, camaraderie, and the inspiration that comes from running with others. Whether your goal is to become a runner, to run your first race, or to set a personal best, you’ll find a welcoming atmosphere and coaches who encourage you to pursue your goals and have fun. 

NYRR Group Training will help you get stronger and faster with your choice of seven different types of weekly sessions:

  • Turnover Tuesdays, which focus on interval training (faster short runs with rest intervals between them)
  • Mashup Wednesdays, which offer a variety of interval and tempo workouts
  • ON HOLD UNTIL SPRING 2020: 
    Track Wednesdays,
     which concentrate on speed intervals
  • ON HOLD UNTIL SPRING 2020:
    Staten Island Speedwork Wednesday
    , which features workouts designed to help you run faster.
  • Tempo Thursdays, which primarily feature tempo runs (steady runs at a challenging effort)
  • Flex Day Fridays, which feature recovery-style runs, mental preparation for upcoming races, and different aspects of training such as flexibility, meditation, mobility, strength, and nutrition to supplement hard workouts on other days.
  • ON HOLD FOR NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2019 SESION:
    Weekend Long Runs
    , coach-led runs on the streets of NYC in the weeks leading up to key NYRR races throughout the year Runners are divided into compatible groups based on their experience, including results in recent New York Road Runners races when applicable. In a mutually supportive and inspiring environment, you’ll meet like-minded runners and new training partners. (No more loneliness of the long-distance runner!) Weekend long runs will return in January 2020.

    • November 12-December 19 (Express winter holiday 6-week session): Registration is now open.

    All workouts will last about one hour.

    Please note: NYRR Group Training will not be held on Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29 in observance of Thanksgiving. The rate for November-December sessions that meet on Thursdays or Fridays will be prorated.

    Special Groups

    Fundamentals/Run-Walk Group
    In a fun and supportive environment, this separate section of Group Training welcomes new runners, those returning to the sport, and those who have yet to run a mile in less than 13 minutes. Over the course of the eight-week session, runners will be given all the tools they need to progress to a 30-minute nonstop run. No experience is required, and lots of encouragement will be offered.

    All workouts except Weekend Long Runs include a bag-check area overseen by NYRR staff.

    Fees

    One workout per week:

    NYRR members—$80 ($10/ workout based on 8-week session)
    *Weekend Long Runs $40 ($10/workout based on 4 runs)
    Non-members—$100 ($12.50/ workout based on 8-week session)
    * Weekend Long Runs $50 ($12.50/workout based on 4 runs)

    Two workouts per week (Tuesday and Thursday):

    NYRR members—$150 ($9.37/ workout based on 8-week session)
    Non-members—$180 ($11.25/ workout based on 8-week session)


    Class registration fees are non-refundable and may not be deferred or transferred to another runner after the start of the eight-week session. Location and/or time transfers are allowed pending availability. Please email training@nyrr.org with any questions.

    Class Structure

    Runners are divided into compatible groups based on their experience, including results in recent New York Road Runners races when applicable.     Every NYRR Group Training workout begins with a warm-up (including running technique work) and ends with a strength-and-flexibility component.

    All sessions except Flex Day Friday include challenging workouts, ranging from intervals to tempo runs. Visit our training terms page to get a better understanding of each type of workout, and meet the coaches who will be leading the workouts.
