NYRR Group Training

Welcome to NYRR Group Training, with sessions for runners in all five boroughs of New York City.

Geared toward runners of all levels, from newcomers to experienced competitive racers, these workouts offer coaching, camaraderie, and the inspiration that comes from running with others. Whether your goal is to become a runner, to run your first race, or to set a personal best, you’ll find a welcoming atmosphere and coaches who encourage you to pursue your goals and have fun. 

NYRR Group Training will help you get stronger and faster with your choice of seven different types of weekly sessions:

  • Turnover Tuesdays, which focus on interval training (faster short runs with rest intervals between them)
  • Mashup Wednesdays, which offer a variety of interval and tempo workouts
  • Track Wednesdays, which concentrate on speed intervals
  • Staten Island Speedwork Wednesday, which features workouts designed to help you run faster.
  • Tempo Thursdays, which primarily feature tempo runs (steady runs at a challenging effort)
  • Flex Day Fridays, which feature recovery-style runs, mental preparation for upcoming races, and different aspects of training such as flexibility, meditation, mobility, strength, and nutrition to supplement hard workouts on other days.
  • Weekend Long Runs, coach-led runs on the streets of NYC in the weeks leading up to key NYRR races throughout the year Runners are divided into compatible groups based on their experience, including results in recent New York Road Runners races when applicable. In a mutually supportive and inspiring environment, you’ll meet like-minded runners and new training partners. (No more loneliness of the long-distance runner!)

    • November 12-December 19 (Express winter holiday 6-week session): Registration opens Tuesday, October 22

    All workouts will last about one hour, with the exception of Extended Tempo, which lasts 90 minutes, and the weekend long run which is dependent upon mileage.

    Special Groups

    Fundamentals/Run-Walk Group
    In a fun and supportive environment, this separate section of Group Training welcomes new runners, those returning to the sport, and those who have yet to run a mile in less than 13 minutes. Over the course of the eight-week session, runners will be given all the tools they need to progress to a 30-minute nonstop run. No experience is required, and lots of encouragement will be offered.

    Weekend Long Runs
    Are you training for the TCS New York City Marathon, or another fall marathon in that time frame? Look no further than our Weekend Long Run program, where we meet at various locations around the city. Geared specifically towards the TCS New York City Marathon, these coach-led runs will give you the mileage you need and the motivation you seek to run your best marathon in early November. These runs will be coached to accommodate those who run 11 minutes per mile or faster for a long training run and will start with a base long run of eight miles and growing to 14 by the end of the session. These runs will meet on July 13 (8 miles), August 3 (11 miles), August 17 (12 miles) and August 31 (14 miles). These long runs will continue to progress in the September session, peaking in time for the TCS New York City Marathon. Bag check will not be offered for these workouts.

     

    Welcome Back Extended Tempo
    If you’re gearing up for a fall marathon or want to get more mileage at tempo-run pace, this offering is for you! These 90-minute coach-led extended tempo runs will focus on pacing the marathon distance well and giving you the motivation and race-day strategy you need. While we will explore all that Central Park has to offer, most of these runs will focus on the final miles of the TCS New York City Marathon course. Runners should arrive dressed and ready to run. There is no changing facility onsite, but a baggage-check area will be overseen by an NYRR staff member at these workouts.

    All workouts except Weekend Long Runs include a bag-check area overseen by NYRR staff.

    Fees

    One workout per week:

    NYRR members—$80 ($10/ workout based on 8-week session)
    *Weekend Long Runs $40 ($10/workout based on 4 runs)
    Non-members—$100 ($12.50/ workout based on 8-week session)
    * Weekend Long Runs $50 ($12.50/workout based on 4 runs)

    Two workouts per week (Tuesday and Thursday):

    NYRR members—$150 ($9.37/ workout based on 8-week session)
    Non-members—$180 ($11.25/ workout based on 8-week session)


    Class registration fees are non-refundable and may not be deferred or transferred to another runner after the start of the eight-week session. Location and/or time transfers are allowed pending availability. Please email training@nyrr.org with any questions.

    Class Structure

    Every NYRR Group Training workout begins with a warm-up (including running technique work) and ends with a strength-and-flexibility component.
