A Quarter Mile With Misty Mountain Runners

David Yan of Misty Mountain Runners at the 2019 NYRR Staten Island Half

Name: David (Yi) Wan

Club: Misty Mountain Runners

Fartlek or tempo? Tempo. I like every aspect of tempo running: Faster but even pace, harder effort, and the running rhythm and form at that pace. Tempo usually is the workout I look forward to the most.

Favorite NYRR race? NYRR Team Championships and the NYRR Queens 10K. As a tradition, Misty Mountain Runners hosts post-race parties/picnics for both races. I really enjoy catching up with running friends and the delicious homemade Chinese food!

Favorite race distance? Ten miles to half-marathon. I like both a speedy feeling and endurance. This range of distance offers both.

Favorite distance to run? Twelve miles.

Running hero? I certainly admire elites such as Eliud Kipchoge, Kenenisa Bekele, and Meb Keflezighi, but the people who inspire me day-to-day are many of my persistent teammates!

Post-race meal? Omelette with a cup of coffee.

Cold-weather or warm-weather running? Warm.

Treadmills: yay or nay? Yay. Softer surface, and warm in winter and cool in summer!

Most exotic place you’ve ever run? Paradise Island in the Bahamas, or Stockholm.

Inspirational quote? "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift."   Steve Prefontaine

Song that makes you pick it up? "Rise" by Katy Perry.

Toughest NYRR race course? The TCS New York City Marathon. The hilly course makes it physically challenging, the enthusiastic crowds make it mentally difficult to control the pace early in the race.

Three people you’d like on a training run? My dad, my son, and my uncle.

Best non-running account you follow on Instagram? Quicktake.

Your club, in five words? Family, love, support, pursuit, grit.
