Come Plog with Us on November 4!
NYRR is hosting a “plogging” event on Friday, November 4, at 10:00 a.m. starting from the NYRR RUNCENTER featuring the NB Run Hub and headed out to the streets of NYC. All are welcome at this free event, co-led by an NYRR coach and professional runner, activist, and podcast host Tina Muir, to pick up trash and enjoy a leisurely 3-mile walk/run together. Learn more and register.
What Is Plogging?
A combination of the word “jogging” and “plocka upp,” the Swedish phrase for "to pick up," plogging is picking up litter while you are out for a run or walk.
Litter is an issue in our communities, waterways, and natural spaces. Litter has damaging effects on our health and the health of wildlife. With plogging, runners and walkers can take direct action against litter as individuals and whole communities.
Plogging is also a great way to incorporate new body movements into your run such as bending, squatting, stretching, and lunging to pick up trash. It’s also beneficial for the psyche: When you plog, you’re running to help heal the earth and that can be a good feeling.
What Do You Need to Plog?
To plog successfully and safely, first consider your environment and general rules of runner safety. Wear bright, reflective clothing and safety lights if you’re plogging along a road or in a wooded area. Bring along a container for the trash you collect, and wear protective gloves (and use your judgment with items that are sharp or otherwise potentially dangerous).
