DEIS at NYRR

Our mission at New York Road Runners is to help and inspire people through running. We are advancing our commitment to a more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and socially responsible NYRR—for our team, for our community, and for the sport we love, running.

We are building toward and sustaining a culture and operating model that reflect our values. We are enriching our culture through advocacy, workforce diversity initiatives, and promoting a culture of inclusion and belonging. We are deepening our community engagement efforts by nurturing relationships and implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices into program design.

Our Top Priorities

  • Become a Unified NYRR.
Come together as one team with one vision, shared values, and aligned goals across the organization.
  • Integrate Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Responsibility (DEIS) Into Everything We Do.
Build toward and sustain a culture and operating model that reflect our values.
  • Maximize Our Impact.
Leverage our expertise to accelerate how we drive meaningful impact across all of our offerings.

Where We Are

  • Leadership and Structural Changes: We have had leadership and structural changes as we charter our way forward. We are intentionally fostering an environment for forward-thinking leaders to embed and activate DEIS into everything we do.
  • Setting a New Course: Working to restore internal trust, refining leadership, and setting strategic priorities to take NYRR into the future.
  • Instituting a Stronger DEIS Foundation: Striving to better serve our employees and community.
    • We evaluated our job family structure, promotions, and compensation strategy. We are actively working through roadmaps for career planning.
    • We are expanding our recruiting pipeline and outreach.
    • We are reviewing policies and procedures, including hiring, performance review system, and complaint procedures.
    • We are creating more spaces for shared learning, difficult conversations, inspiring advocacy, and amplifying voices through our speaker series, panels, and Diversity Documentary Series which confronts socially important topics like antiracism, gender, sex, and sexual identity discrimination, ableism, and classism.
    • We are preparing to share our workforce metrics before the end of the year with our staff.
    • Trainings kicked off in January 2021 and will continue through September 2021. We have worked with our partners to provide inclusive training and workshops for our staff and people managers. These include anti-discrimination and harassment, implicit bias, bystander intervention/upstander, disability etiquette, and LGBTQIA+ respect and inclusion/allyship training.
    • Leveraging org-wide collaboration and execution, we intentionally foster an environment to embed and activate DEIS into our programming and activations, such as creating the videos below with our running community and partners:
Community is the Center of Harlem Run
NYRR Celebrates Women’s History Month: What Makes Us Strong
Long Runs Short Stories, Presented by TCS: Protect and Preserve Chinatowns and AAPI Neighborhoods
Everybody’s Welcome: The Story of Front Runners New York
    • A cross-department gender ID task force was created. They work in partnership with the DEIS team and our gender inclusion consultant. To increase inclusivity and representation for our diverse community running our races, we’ve updated our registration process with the addition of a non-binary category. Our live results page also reflects the addition of a non-binary category; check out our FAQ page for more information. Our consultant also did a complete website overview and shared recommendations that we are executing. We are also evaluating all our internal platforms and signage and implementing changes. It is part of a holistic plan to elevate belonging, inclusion, and representation for our LGBTQIA+ staff and community.
    • In collaboration with other departments, we are elevating more social responsibility opportunities and communications, including volunteer initiatives and sustainability events.
  • Evolving Programming and Operations: Redefining ways to safely deliver each of our offerings under emerging requirements.
  • Seeking Efficiency: Staying focused on our actions and processes to drive productivity across the organization.

DEIS Framework

Internal

We have rooted four key pillars within our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Responsibility in our DEIS Framework. They are:

  • Advocacy
  • Workplace Diversity
  • Inclusion and Belonging
  • Compliance
External

We are establishing strategic alliances and partnerships with to engage and amplify our community. We are partnering with external-facing departments on strategies for meaningful community outreach and engagement.
