2020 TCS New York City Marathon Canceled Due to Coronavirus-Related Health and Safety Concerns

The 2020 TCS New York City Marathon, set to take place on November 1, has been canceled. New York Road Runners (NYRR), the event organizer, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of the City of New York, have made the decision to cancel the world’s largest marathon due to coronavirus-related health and safety concerns for runners, spectators, volunteers, staff, and the many partners and communities that support the event.

Runner Resolution FAQs

What were my resolution options for the canceled 2020 TCS New York City Marathon?

Runners were able to choose one of these resolution options during the resolution selection window (July 15–August 15, 2020):

  1. Refund of 2020 entry fee
  2. Guaranteed complimentary entry to a future New York City Marathon*
  3. Donate the value of your entry fee to support NYRR's free youth and community programs

With the health and safety of runners during the ongoing global pandemic being our top priority, the field sizes for future New York Road Runners events have yet to be determined. NYRR will work closely with government officials and medical experts to determine the necessary health and safety protocols to establish the appropriate field size for the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon and other events.

* If you selected complimentary entry for a future marathon (option 2), you will be asked to participate in a future marathon selection process in 2021 to choose the year for your complimentary entry (either 2021, 2022, or 2023). You may not be guaranteed your preferred year due to potential limitations to future field sizes.

As we work through the planning process with government officials, we will make it a priority to share information as it is determined.

When was the resolution selection window?

Runners registered for the 2020 TCS New York City Marathon could select their resolution option between July 15 and August 15. NYRR sent these runners an email with details on July 15. After the August 15 deadline, runners are not able to change their resolution selection. Runners who do not make a selection prior to the deadline forfeit all resolution options.

If I chose to receive a refund of my race entry fee, when will I receive it?

If you select Refund, you will receive payment on the credit card used for your entry 10–14 days after the selection process closes on August 15. A member from the NYRR Runner Services team will reach out to runners whose refund cannot be returned to the original credit card. A check will then be mailed out after runner details are confirmed. Please note this process may take several days.

Will I receive my race shirt, bib, and medal?

Race shirts, bibs, and medals will not be distributed for the 2020 TCS New York City Marathon.

When will registration for the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon open?

Dates for the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon application period will be announced at a later date.

If I chose the resolution option to run in a future New York City Marathon, what will my options be if future events are canceled or if there are travel restrictions from my country?

NYRR’s race cancellation policy will remain in place for future New York City Marathons (2021, 2022, 2023). If future New York City Marathons are canceled for any reason, NYRR will announce resolution options and process.

What is the status of this year’s 9+1 qualifier program for guaranteed entry to the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon?

Runners can still complete the 9+1 qualifier program in 2020; however, they are not guaranteed entry for 2021. With the health and safety of runners during the ongoing global pandemic being our top priority, the field sizes for future New York Road Runners events have yet to be determined. During the months ahead, NYRR will work closely with government officials and medical experts to determine the necessary health and safety protocols to establish the appropriate field size for the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon, as well as all of our events.

Due to potential limitations to future field sizes, completing the 9+1 program in 2020 will provide guaranteed, non-complimentary entry to the marathon in either 2021, 2022, or 2023. Qualifying runners will be contacted in 2021 regarding the selection process for the entry they earned through the 9+1 program. As we work through the planning process with government officials, we will make it a priority to share information as it is determined.

NYRR members can earn race credits in two ways:

  1. Complete scored, qualifying races in 2020 (including virtual 9+1 qualifying races).
  2. Be registered for qualifying races that are canceled and choose the TCS New York City Marathon 9+1 qualifier credit option as their race cancellation resolution.

The +1 Volunteer portion of our program has been waived in 2020, due to limited volunteer opportunities.

Due to the ongoing health and safety risks associated with COVID-19, additional changes to our 2020 in-person race schedule will be announced soon. Please visit our Virtual Racing page for our 2020 NYRR Volvo Virtual Racing Powered by Strava race schedule, featuring 12 new virtual races. Five of the new Virtual Races will be designated 9+1 program qualifier races and will count as credit toward completion of the 9+1 Program in 2020.

9+1 credit will not be granted to 2020 TCS New York City Marathon registrants.

I want to complete the 9+1 program in 2020 but you are only offering five virtual qualifying races. Why are you not offering nine?

NYRR is continuing the 2020 9+1 program for runners who already started the program through our in-person events or by selecting race credit as a resolution option from a canceled 2020 NYRR event.

Can I use my 2020 TCS New York City Marathon qualifying time for the 2021 race?

Due to the expected demand and potential limitation to field size, runners will not have the option to earn guaranteed entry to the 2021 Marathon through our Time Qualifier program.

What will be the process if I earn guaranteed entry to a future New York City Marathon through multiple methods in 2020 (e.g. Virtual TCS New York City Marathon paid tier, 2020 9+1 program, 2020 cancellation resolution)?

Runners who earn guaranteed entry to a future marathon through multiple methods in 2020 will be able to select a future marathon for each entry they earned (for example, they can select guaranteed entry to 2022 and guaranteed entry to 2023). Further details on the selection process and timeline will be announced in 2021. You may not be guaranteed your preferred year due to potential limitations to future field sizes. As we work through the planning process with government officials, we will make it a priority to share information as it is determined.

I have multiple entries to a future TCS New York City Marathon. Can I give one of those entries to someone else?

All entries are non-transferable.

Which entry methods will be prioritized if entry caps are reached for future TCS New York City Marathon resolution selections?

NYRR will communicate prioritization at a later time.

Will NYRR celebrate the 50th running of the New York City Marathon at the 2021 event?

Yes, NYRR will celebrate the 50th running of the New York City Marathon in 2021.

Will NYRR hold a drawing for entry to the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon?

NYRR will work closely with government officials and medical experts to determine the necessary health and safety protocols to establish the appropriate field size for the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon. After the appropriate field size is determined, NYRR will communicate whether there will be an entry drawing for non-guaranteed runners.

If I am a Streaker/15+ runner, will I get credit for the 2020 race?

Streakers and 15+ Marathoners will not receive credit for the canceled 2020 TCS New York City Marathon, but their streak will remain intact. Runners who would reach 15 Marathon finishes if 2020 were run can reach out to NYRR Runner Services when the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon application opens.

Why is NYRR asking me to donate my entry fee to youth and community programs?

As a non-profit, NYRR relies on donations to help support our free youth and community programs.  During COVID-19, we have continued to serve and have pivoted our programs, offering Rising New York Road Runners Active at Home for our youth and NYRR Striders at Home for our seniors. By donating your entry fee, you will help us continue to make a difference during these challenging times.

Learn more about NYRR’s year-round impact in the community. Over the past 62 years, we have grown from a local running club to a global champion of the running movement, impacting lives through a wide variety of free programs for people of all ages and abilities.

If I chose to donate the value of my entry fee, is that a tax-deductible donation?

Yes! When you choose to donate the value of your entry fee you are supporting the vital work of NYRR’s free youth and community programs. You will receive a tax receipt by email within two weeks of the August 15 selection deadline.

Will my insurance premium be reimbursed?

Runners can contact Allianz Global Assistance customer service directly by phone at (866) 672-9580 or by email at customerservice@allianzassistance.com.

If I purchased race insurance, should I file a claim to have my registration fee reimbursed?

Runners who are reimbursed through Allianz will not be eligible for any further 2020 TCS New York City Marathon resolution options through NYRR.

International Tour Operator, Charity, and NYRR Team for Kids Runners

What are the resolution options for runners who registered through a charity or an International Tour Operator?

Runners who gained entry through a charity or an International Tour Operator should reach out to that organization for the options available to them.

Runners who gained entry through an Iinternational Tour Operator are only eligible only for an entry refund. International Tour Operators will address entry refunds individually.

Are deadlines still in place for participants running on a charity team?

Specific questions about fundraising deadlines and timelines should be directed to the manager of the charity team with which you are affiliated.

Virtual TCS New York City Marathon

Is there a virtual version of the 2020 TCS New York City Marathon?
