Susannah Scaroni

Susannah Scaroni USA

In 2022, Susannah Scaroni snatched her first TCS New York City Marathon title, breaking the tape in 1:42:43 to beat the previous course record of 1:43:04 set by Tatyana McFadden in 2015. It was her first New York City Marathon title and second Abbott World Marathon Majors race victory following her Chicago Marathon win the month prior. She then went on a tear in 2023, winning the Boston Marathon, her second United Airlines NYC Half, her fifth consecutive Mastercard New York Mini 10K, and a bronze medal at the World Para Athletics Championships. She has been on the podium 18 times now at Abbott World Marathon Majors races.

At her third Paralympics in 2021, Scaroni won gold in the 5,000 meters and bronze in the 800 meters. That concluded a fantastic summer that began with her third consecutive Mastercard New York Mini 10K title. But a month later, she collided with a car while training on the roads in Illinois, suffering a fracture in her vertebrae that sidelined her from competition the rest of the year. She returned fully healthy the next June to win her fourth Mini 10K in a world-best time of 21:10, break the 5,000-meter world record, win Grandma’s Marathon in a world-best time of 1:27:31, and win the Peachtree Road Race 10K in a new course record.

In 2019, Scaroni set what was then a world-best 22:22 in defending her New York Mini 10K title. She also had a fantastic 2018 that included runner-up finishes at the Boston Marathon, Berlin Marathon, and United Airlines NYC Half, a third-place finish at the London Marathon, and victories at the AJC Peachtree Road Race and the first-ever wheelchair division of the Mini 10K. In 2017, she had a breakout season that consisted of podium finishes at the Tokyo and Boston marathons and her first-ever victory at an NYRR event, the United Airlines NYC Half.

Scaroni was raised in Tekoa, Wash., and attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she earned a masters in nutritional science. She is now a registered dietitian and still bases her training out of Champaign with the school’s highly successful wheelchair athletics program. Last summer, she served as an ambassador for NYRR Run for the Future, a free six-week program that introduces 11th and 12th grade high school young women to the sport of running.
