A retired oarswoman, Daphne Matalene joined the NYRR coaching staff in the fall of 2016. She’s run eight marathons in three time zones—and roughly a gazillion other races, from the 800 meters at the Armory to the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon in San Francisco. When not running, Daphne is probably thinking about her next Sweetgreen salad (and which wine to pair with it). She’s probably pondering the same thing on the run, too. Say hello if you spot her—she’ll snap out of it.
What is your favorite place to run?
Along the Charles in Boston—it’s super-flat, and it reminds me of college. But I live in NYC, so I will never stop loving the Bridle Path.
What is your favorite NYRR race?
The Brooklyn Half. My PR (1:45) happened there, and you get to have a hot dog for breakfast when it’s over! If that’s not the breakfast of champions, I don’t know what is.
What is your personal running motto?
