NYRR Striders are Redefining What it Means to Be Older Americans

This May, we’re celebrating Older Americans Month, and this year’s theme—“Engage at Every Age”—couldn’t be a better fit for NYRR Striders, a program that offers 35 weekly coach-led walking sessions at senior centers, community facilities, and neighborhood parks across the five boroughs of NYC.

“Engage at Every Age” emphasizes that you’re never too old to take part in activities that improve your well-being, help you make a difference in your community, and give you an opportunity to pass along wisdom and experience to younger generations.

To join in the celebration, we talked to NYRR Striders across NYC about their goals, accomplishments, and how they want to be defined. Their responses will make you smile, laugh, and maybe shed a tear or two—so get those tissues ready.

Rachel Lazin: "I wouldn't exchange this time with any other time in my life"

Juan Jose "Moose" Gonzalez: "My goal is to be diabetes-free"

Valerie Williams: "We are vibrant, we are active, and we are still alive and able to do a lot of things"

Susan Schwartz: "I did a half-marathon. That was really the thrill of my life"

Linda Johnson: "My kids are really happy that I'm staying active"

Davie Rivera: "We have coaches that push us and allow us to do amazing things"
