The Bronx is full of free and low-cost healthy activities for all ages.
On Sunday, September 30, thousands of runners will boogie down in the Bronx by taking part in the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile.
And the timing is apt as in September, New York Road Runners is celebrating 60 years of free community running in the place where it all began: the Bronx. As part of its commitment to help and inspire people through running, NYRR is a community partner of the #Not62 campaign, which encourages Bronx residents to live a healthy, active lifestyle.
The campaign was set up after the borough was named the least healthy county in the state of New York in a 2014 Health Rankings Report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
“This was somber, unacceptable news for us,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “We realized that the something had to be done to address the problem. And we set out to work.”
“We want Bronx people to help push each other to be healthier through social media, sharing their favorite healthy meals, workout routines, and restaurants,” added Diaz Jr.
The borough has teamed up with organizations such as NYRR to find ways to improve health outcomes for Bronx residents.
And while the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile may be sold out, there are many opportunities to get out and exercise in the Bronx, ranging from youth and adult races to a free walking club and bike ride event. Read about these programs, and more, below.

NYRR Open Run
If you are looking for a cheap and community-driven way to exercise, NYRR has a program that is perfect for you!
For runners and walkers of all abilities and age groups, NYRR Open Run brings free weekly runs to New York City’s Parks, and four of these are in the Bronx. St. Mary’s Park, Soundview Park, Pelham Bay Park, and Crotona Park each host an Open Run, all of which are free of charge and organized by volunteers.

Tour de Bronx
As part of the #Not62 effort, the Tour de Bronx has grown in stature. Last year’s edition attracted more than 10,000 cyclists.
The free cycling event offers riders two options, a 25-mile route that takes in Clason Point and Pelham Bay Park, or a 40-mile event that goes through the historic Fort Schuyler, Woodlawn, and Riverdale. Both rides end at New York Botanical Garden.
Other free healthy activities set up by the borough include the Bronx Borough President’s Cup youth baseball tournament and the Bronx Week Family Olympiad.

The running community has exploded on social media in recent years, with many runners looking for that perfect Instagram photo to highlight their workouts to their friends and followers.
From that, NYRR has created Running Routes, a resource of all the most photogenic running routes in New York City. With trails in all five boroughs, you can explore all of the beauty and history the city has to offer.

Van Cortlandt Park is one of New York’s City’s biggest and most beautiful parks. It is also home to NYRR’s Group Training program in the Bronx. Geared toward runners of all abilities, this program brings people together to train with NYRR’s skilled coaches, and helps runner reach their goals—whatever they may be.
The Fred Lebow Cross Country Championships is a great place for your Rising New York Road Runner to shine.
Cross Country Races and Youth Events
Fall is cross country season, and in New York City, Van Cortlandt Park is home to many of NYRR’s cross country events. Coming up is the Fred Lebow Cross Country Championships on November 18, held in honor of New York City Marathon co-founder Fred Lebow. The championships will also host Rising New York Road Runners youth races, all of which are completely free!
In December, Van Cortlandt Park will play host to the NYRR Pete McArdle Cross Country 15K. This race covers rugged terrain across the park and will challenge both your endurance and strength.
The Striders program aims to make running and walking more accessible for older adults.
For all the active older adults out there, NYRR Striders program offers a way to not only get moving, but to have fun with your peers. This completely free program has weekly sessions (six in the Bronx alone) where participants get together to walk, perform strength exercises, and learn about healthy nutrition.
