Join us as we continue our cross country series with the NYRR Kurt Steiner Cross Country 5K. Steiner, a beloved race announcer famous for his "If you can hear my voice, you can break…" messages, encouraging countless race finishers to run their hearts out. He was a founding member of NYRR and a competitive runner and race walker.
Born in Austria, Steiner was a member of the French Foreign Legion who escaped from enemy captors. Steiner worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help stage the first five-borough New York City Marathon and assisted NYRR with race scoring, race applications, and media activities.
Please note: NYRR cross country races do not count toward the 9+1 program.

Don’t miss out on the other races in our NYRR cross country series at Van Cortlandt Park:
Start on "The Flats," a wide field bordering Broadway, and head south. Turn left/east to pass the Van Cortlandt Mansion along the southern edge of The Flats, then take another left to head north toward the woods at the Cow Path entrance. Follow the trail as you continue north.
Continue on the trail as it runs parallel to the Henry Hudson Parkway, and make the right turn toward the Back Hills as you reach the bridge that crosses over the Parkway.
Complete the Back Hills loop, then turn right after crossing back over the bridge to head toward The Flats. Exit the woods with about three-quarters of a mile to go, bear right, and continue to the finish along Broadway beyond the Tortoise and Hare statue.
