United Airlines NYC Half

Spirits Soar from Central Park to Wall Street

Few events can shut down New York City’s Times Square—but the United Airlines NYC Half is one of them. And on Sunday morning, nearly 20,000 runners from 84 countries ran through its famous florescent lights just after passing the halfway point of a 13.1-mile course that starts in Central Park, runs through Midtown, travels down a traffic-free West Side Highway, and finishes in the Financial District.

NYRR Team for Kids Ambassador Molly Huddle secured her third consecutive United Airlines NYC Half title, taking the tape in 1:08:19. On the men’s side, Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia was first across the finish in 1:00:04. In the professional wheelchair races, Ernst van Dyk of South Africa took first with a 47:28 finish, another three-peat victory; Susannah Scaroni was winner on the women’s side in 55:06. A major highlight of Sunday’s event was the third annual NYRR Times Square Youth Run at the United Airlines NYC Half. Several hundred youth ages 7 to 18 sprinted along an out-and-back course on Seventh Avenue, running right alongside participants in the adult race.

Times Square was also a popular spot for spectators and volunteers. Matt Wong, cofounder of the Dashing Whippets Running Team, was among the 2,000 volunteers who help make the United Airlines NYC Half a more enjoyable experience for runners, handing out water and Gatorade at a fluid station along 42nd Street.

“We like being in the middle of it all, cheering for people on our team as well as all the runners,” he said. “Seeing all the elites is also a big draw.”

After finishing the race, the first event of the 2017 NYRR Five-Borough Series, runners celebrated their accomplishment with friends...
