Racing Through the Heights

Temperatures were low but spirits were high at the NYRR Washington Heights Salsa, Blues, and Shamrocks 5K, where more than 4,400 runners headed uptown to race. After celebrating Mardi Gras earlier in the week, runners kicked off Saint Patrick's Day festivities with a run showcasing Washington Heights' vibrant cultures.

While the forecast called for conditions well below freezing, these brave runners proved their mettle by keeping their #ResolveToRun going into March, getting their 9+1 program credit early in 2017, or earning the simple satisfaction of crossing the finish line.

The 3.1-mile out-and-back course took runners along city streets and into Fort Tryon Park, circling The Cloisters and offering panoramic views of the Hudson River as runners reached the halfway point.

In the race up front, Brendan Martin of the New York Athletic Club crossed the finish line first in 15:08, while on the women's side, Harriott Kelly from Urban Athletics broke the tape in 17:16.

The 5K also marked the first club points race of the NYRR season, with the New York Athletic Club setting out to an early lead in the men's standings. In the women's competition, Central Park Track Club–New Balance started the 2017 club season with a win, and the whole team huddled together for a post-race photo.

Approaching the finish line, runners could sync their kick to music from a variety of genres, including—as the race's name suggests—salsa, blues, and Irish folk music, providing a steady beat to keep racers moving through those final meters.

With momentum building toward Saint Patrick's Day, runners and their friends can continue the celebration at the United Airlines NYC Half on March 19. Watch the race live on WABC-TV, Channel 7, or cheer from the sidelines as more than 20,000 runners trek from Central Park through Times Square to South Street Seaport.
