NYRR Staten Island Half

In 2017, the NYRR Five-Borough Series will once again finish with the NYRR Staten Island Half, a race dedicated to making a positive impact on the borough that hosts the start of the TCS New York City Marathon. Scheduled just four weeks before the TCS New York City Marathon, the NYRR Staten Island Half is a perfect tune-up for NYRR’s flagship event and features fabulous views of New York Harbor and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

The NYRR Staten Island Half is a part of NYRR's Five-Borough Series: Run New York. Five Boroughs. One City. The NYRR Five-Borough Series showcases our renewed commitment to the individuals and communities in each borough. More than just five races, the NYRR Five-Borough Series—the United Airlines NYC Half, the Airbnb Brooklyn Half, the NYRR Queens 10K, the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile, and the NYRR Staten Island Half—is a celebration of what makes each borough unique, inspiring, and an amazing place to get out and get moving!

Wave Starts

The NYRR Staten Island Half will start in two waves, the first (corrals AA-F) at 8:00 a.m. and the second (corrals G-L) at 8:30 a.m. You will receive your wave assignment in your confirmation email the week before the race and your corral assignment at number pickup.


Transportation and Ferry Times

We encourage participants to take public transit to and from the race. Use the MTA's Weekender schedule to plan your race-day transportation and note the following Staten Island Ferry times recommended for each wave: 

  • Wave 1: 6:00 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 7:00 a.m.
  • Wave 2: 6:30 a.m., 7:00 a.m., 7:30 a.m. 

NYRR Pace Team

Members of the NYRR Pace Team will guide participants toward specific goal times over the 13.1 miles. There will be signs in the corals starting at 6:51 per mile. If you choose to run with a pace group, pacers—you’ll recognize their blue and white striped tanks—will carry signs that correspond with the finish times and paces below:

Run Four out of Six

Eligibility for entry to the 2018 United Airlines NYC Half will be guaranteed for NYRR members who have an active membership by the last qualifying event of the 2016 NYRR Five-Borough Series (NYRR Staten Island Half on October 8), and who run four of the following six events in 2017: Fred Lebow Manhattan Half, United Airlines NYC Half, Airbnb Brooklyn Half, NYRR Queens 10K, New Balance Bronx 10 Mile, and NYRR Staten Island Half.


Run with Team for Kids

Add meaning to your miles by running the NYRR Staten Island Half with NYRR's Team for Kids. You'll help raise vital funds to support NYRR Youth Programs and have unlimited access to TFK's team of coaches via email and phone.


Fire Lieutenant Victor J. Navarra FDNY Family of Champions Trophy

This award is presented to the fastest New York City Fire Department (FDNY) member at the NYRR Staten Island Half. The trophy is named after Victor Navarra, a retired FDNY lieutenant who coordinated the start of 26 New York City Marathons, until his passing in 2007.

If you are active FDNY, be sure to select FDNY Running Club as your team in your My NYRR account. And don't forget to represent your firehouse by wearing your favorite FDNY shirt on race day.

HSS Recovery Zone

After the race, stop by the HSS Recovery Zone, located in the post-finish area inside the Richmond County Bank Ballpark, to stretch out with help from one of Hospital for Special Surgery's expert physical therapists and get tips on how to best recover from your 13.1 miles.

Please have your NYRR Member Number (available on your NYRR member card or My NYRR) at time of engraving. Can’t make it Sunday or Monday? Send a proxy to have your medal engraved; they’ll just need your NYRR Member Number.

Finishers who are not NYRR members can purchase an NYRR membership through their My NYRR account, and will be able to have their medal engraved after becoming an NYRR member. Visit our Membership page for more details on NYRR membership levels and prices.

Course Info
Miles 1–3: You’ll start at Bay Street and Slosson Terrace and proceed down Bay Street. Just before reaching the 3-mile mark, you’ll turn right onto School Road.

Miles 3–6: From School Road, you'll merge onto Lily Pond Avenue, passing Fort Wadsworth. From there, you will turn right onto Father Capodanno Boulevard and run out along the South Beach shorefront.

Miles 6–9: Turning around at Midland Avenue, you will head back up along Father Capodanno Boulevard, eventually turning left onto Lily Pond Avenue, followed by a quick right onto Battery Road and into Fort Wadsworth.

Miles 9–13.1: Coming out of Fort Wadsworth, you’ll head back up along Bay Street. You’ll turn right onto Edgewater Street and then right onto Front Street. In the homestretch, you’ll turn right back onto Bay Street and finish at Bay Street near Slosson Terrace.

Three-Hour Time Limit: In the interests of safety, any NYRR Staten Island Half participant who is not able to maintain a 13:45-per-mile pace throughout the race (3:00 projected finishing time) will be picked up along the course starting at approximately mile 8 and transported to the finish. The time it takes the last runner to cross the start line (not including those who arrive late to the race) will be added to the overall 3:00 time limit, ensuring all participants a 13:45-per-mile pace. Thank you for your cooperation with this policy.
