Following in a Fitness Fan's Footsteps

More than 5,000 runners turned out for Saturday's NYRR Al Gordon Brooklyn 4M in Prospect Park, and the race's namesake would have felt right at home. A New York Road Runners board member and benefactor, Al Gordon ran marathons well into his 80s and lived to be 107.

Three cheers for winners Gishu Dida Maco (20:19) and Lauren Perkins (23:15), and for all the finishers today!

Conditions were foggy at the 8:00 a.m. start, creating an atmosphere that NYRR President, Events, and TCS New York City Marathon Race Director Peter Ciaccia described as "Scottish moors."

Gordon's grandson John Roberts, a member of NYRR's Board of Directors, spoke to runners at the start, encouraging them to follow his granddad's advice: "Keep moving." Roberts finished in an impressive 26:06!

For many of the runners, the race felt like an early kickoff to spring racing, thanks to the unseasonably warm weather. For some, it was a tune-up to the United Airlines NYC Half, coming up on March 19.

Others, runners of all ages, simply relished an opportunity for a fit and fun start to a February weekend.

Whether you’re completing NYRR’s 9+1 program or looking for opportunities to keep your running strong through spring, don’t miss our upcoming races, like the NYRR Central Park Spring Classic 10K on March 25 or the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K on April 9.
