Beverly Ramos

strava

In 2018, Beverly Ramos broke Kim Conley's event record at the New Balance Bronx 10-Mile in a time of 55:15. Just before the race, she partnered with New York Road Runners, giving her the title Rising New York Road Runners Ambassador & Special Advisor to Puerto Rico.

Ramos earned two NCAA All-American honors while at Kansas State University, graduating with a school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase along with multiple Big 12 accolades. She moved on to represent Puerto Rico internationally, competing at the 2011 and 2013 IAAF World Championships, as well as the 2012 London Olympics, in the steeplechase. Her personal-best time in that event—9:39.33—was set in Sotteville-lès-Rouen, France, in 2012, as is the Puerto Rican record.

Since then, Ramos has taken control of much of the Puerto Rican record book, claiming the top outdoor times over 1500, 3000, 5000, and 10,000 meters. She placed ninth at the World’s Best 10K in San Juan, lowering the national road 10K mark to 33:50 and becoming the first Puerto Rican woman to place in the top 10 in event history.

Her 2:41:56 at the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon was faster than the previous Puerto Rican record by just over three minutes, and qualified her for the 2016 Rio Olympics. In Rio, her second bout representing Puerto Rico at the Olympic Games, Ramos competed in the marathon, and finished in 71st place.

In her United Airlines NYC Half debut in March, she finished eighth in 1:12:09, another Puerto Rican record.

In 2017, Ramos had been training for the TCS New York City Marathon in Puerto Rico when Hurricane Maria made direct landfall. In the catastrophic aftermath of the storm, Ramos’ home was without running water and power, and her cell phone service was sporadic. She was determined to continue training, for herself, her community, and her fans. Knowing if she stayed on the island, this would be the hardest training—physically and emotionally—that she has ever done, Ramos committed to continuing her marathon preparation there, believing it would be an inspiration to many. She found cleared roadways, ran with a headlamp when necessary, and changed her training hours. She dealt with sickness, lack of sleep, and limited food options. Though under much stress, Ramos continually reminded herself to try to do the best that she could. As she regained essential services, she began sharing photos of her training amongst the hurricane’s devastation, writing “Puerto Rico se levanta” in her posts, which means ‘Puerto Rico rises.’ The journey to the TCS New York City Marathon start line was been unexpectedly difficult for Ramos, but one that had miles of meaning.
