Senbere Teferi
Senbere Teferi is a two-time Olympian, two-time World Athletics Championships silver medalist, and the former 5K world-record holder. She is the three-time defending champion of the Mastercard New York Mini 10K – owning the event record in the race – and won the 2022 United Airlines NYC Half. Teferi did not finish in her TCS New York City Marathon debut in 2022 but bounced back in 2023 to finish as runner-up at the United Airlines NYC Half and fifth at the Berlin Marathon. She was also fifth at this year’s Boston Marathon.
Teferi was fifth at the Rio 2016 Olympics and sixth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the 5,000 meters. Six weeks after competing in Tokyo, she broke what was then the 5K world record with a 14:29 performance to win the adizero Road To Records event in Germany. She smashed Sifan Hissan’s previous women-only world record by 15 seconds.
In her NYRR race debut, Teferi won the 2019 UAE Healthy Kidney 10K with a time of 30:59, breaking the previous course record of 31:17, set in 2014 by Joyce Chepkirui. She finished a full minute ahead of Kenya’s Monicah Ngige, the runner-up.
Teferi rose to the top in Ethiopia back in 2011 with a win over 1,500 meters at the Ethiopian Athletics Championships and would go on to win a national title over 5,000 meters two years later.
Her focus then shifted to cross country, where she proved to be just as successful, taking second place in the senior race at the World Championships in 2015 and first place in the team race in spite of suffering an injury the week before the event. She also won a World Athletics Championships silver medal that year in the 5,000 meters.
