These are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the DTFS program.
DTFS is open to kids of all athletic abilities in grades 3 through 8 currently attending New York City public and charter schools.
Yes, DTFS is a school-based program. It requires signed authorization from the school principal in order for students to participate.
No, DTFS is free for all New York City public and charter schools.
The coaching clinics provide important information about the program, training for the events covered in DTFS, and opportunity to meet NYRR staff and fellow coaches.
We do not set a minimum or maximum number of students that can participate in DTFS from each school, except the Citywide Championship meets. We ask however, that coaches prioritize safety and act in accordance with the Chancellor’s Regulations for adult supervision on school trips. In addition, at some meets, according to venue capacities, the total number of students will be capped.
Each student must have the DTFS Release Form and Consent to Film signed by a parent or guardian and kept on file at their school prior to participating in the program. It is the responsibility of the principal and coach to ensure that only those students with completed forms participate in meets.
For the elementary division, students must be in grades 3 through 5 and no older than 12. For the middle school division, students must be in grades 6 through 8 and no older than 15. Students who are older for their grade must compete in the older grade division with students of the same age.
Schools are responsible for arranging their own transportation to school-day meets, and the transportation must comply with DOE policy. Many of the meet locations are accessible via public transportation. The DOE’s Office of School Wellness Programs will assist with transportation as needed for the City Championship meets, which will take place on a weekend day.

The shot weights are based on the USATF guidelines and vary by grade and gender according to the below chart:

Students may not attend as spectators. Only participating students can attend meets. Parents, teachers, and other school personnel may attend the meets as chaperones to support and help manage students. All adults are accountable to their school’s administration and must adhere to DOE policies and standards of good sportsmanship. Parents and spectators must remain in designated seating or viewing areas and may not enter into the competition areas.
Parents and other adults who wish to help officiate at meets must submit a volunteer application to NYRR. A background check will be conducted to ensure the safety of participating children. A determination will be made by 7:00 a.m. the morning of the meet whether a meet needs to be cancelled. If cancellation is necessary, the primary contact for each school will be informed via e-mail, text message, and phone by 8:00 a.m. Schools can also contact (646) 758-9672 from 7:00 a.m. on to hear an automated message regarding whether the meet(s) that day have been cancelled.
