Developmental Cross Country Series Program Details

Developmental Series Meets

The Developmental Cross Country Series (DXCS) includes four developmental events at various park locations around New York City. The program then culminates with the Youth Cross Country Invitational event, a timed and scored race that will act as a championship event. All events, with the exception of the Youth Cross Country Invitational, will take place during the school day between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

The DXCS program is open to public school students in grades 3–8. Coaches may bring up to 50 children. We ask that coaches prioritize safety and act in accordance with the Chancellor’s Regulations for adult supervision on school trips.

At the developmental events, students can participate in a 1- or 2-mile run. Students in grades 3-5 are encouraged to run in the 1-mile event and students in grades 6-8 are encouraged to participate in the 2-mile event. These are only suggestions, as students may choose to run in either event. These events will not be timed; coaches are encouraged to time their students. At the conclusion of each event, runners will receive participant ribbons.

Fred Lebow Cross Country Championship

The Fred Lebow Cross Country Championship event will take place at Van Cortlandt Park, in the Bronx on Sunday, November 16. Coaches are required to pre-register their students for the 1.5-mile event by Friday, October 31st.  All students in grades 3-8 who have attended one developmental met are invited.

Medals are awarded at the Youth Cross Country Invitational, to the top 10 male and female finishers in each of three age divisions, as follows:

  • 11 Years Old and Under
  • 12-14 Years Old
  • 15 Years Old and Over

First, second, and third place plaques are awarded to the top three male and female teams in each of the above age divisions. Team scores are calculated according to standard cross country scoring rules and are based on the finishing places of the top five individuals on a team. The team with the lowest score wins. A team may enter additional athletes in each division, but only the top five are added into the team score.

If it rains on the day of one of the school-day events, a determination will be made by 7:00 a.m. whether the meet needs to be cancelled. If cancellation is necessary, the primary contact for each school will be informed via e-mail, text message, and phone by 8:00 a.m. Cancelled events will not be rescheduled.

Registration for the 2014 Developmental Cross Country program is currently open and will close on September 30, 2014.

(Please note: Registrations for individual athletes are not accepted)

As part of the application process, the school's principal will be sent an email request to review and approve the application. Upon acceptance into the program, Student Release Forms will be sent to the coach. The forms should be signed by the student’s parent or guardian and returned to NYRR via the coach before the event.
