For Kids Born 20012008

Since 1990, this four-week program has given kids of all ability levels expert instruction in track and field events and the opportunity to take part in friendly competition at the world-famous New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory. Events include distance running, sprints, relays, hurdles, long jump, high jump, and javelin. Every participant goes home with a ribbon and a T-shirt.

The City Sports for Kids program is directed by fitness experts Bob and Shelly Glover, who have co-authored best-selling books including The Runner’s Handbook and The Family Fitness Handbook. Nearly 25 years ago they started this program to promote youth physical fitness, help kids develop self-esteem through success-oriented sports, and build bridges of understanding through play between boys and girls of various races and religions. The Glovers are assisted by a staff of seasoned runners.

New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory—"The World's Fastest Track"
The Armory, one of the finest indoor facilities in the country, has been the site of many state, national, and world record-breaking performances. City Sports for Kids uses its 200-meter banked oval track and eight-lane straightaway for running, relays, sprints, and hurdles. Other features of the facility used by the program include sand long-jump pits and a shot-put cage.

The Armory is the mecca for high school and college track in the New York City area. Thousands of youth participate in the various invitational and championship meets held on its state-of-the-art track—including the national high school championships. The National Track and Field Hall of Fame at the Armory opened in 2004.
