Face Relaxation

A form exercise that teaches runners to relax their jaw muscles and face muscles

Tags: high school, form

  1. Have runners inhale deeply and then, while exhaling, make an audible sound by vibrating the cheeks and lips.
  2. Then have them try the exercise while jogging in place.
  3. The main purpose of the activity is to give kids a tool for recognizing unnecessary tension when they run. Going forward, cue kids to relax their jaws by reminding them of this activity.

Performance Points:

  • Encourage runners to drop their jaws and relax their faces as they blow out through their lips.
  • Remind them to relax the shoulders and hands as well.
  • Have runners maintain optimal running form; see the Form 101 segments for more information.

Training Specifics:

When: Early in the season and repeated as necessary

  • Teaches relaxation of the jaw and face muscles, which promotes relaxation through the body, prevents the waste of oxygen and energy, and leads to more comfortable running
