5. Evaluation & Requirements

Program evaluation is an important part of our partnership. By evaluating how your Mighty Milers program is progressing, we can be sure that we are fulfilling our mission of increasing children's physical fitness and overall well-being. We also want to be sure that you have all the support you need for a successful program. To evaluate your progress, we use the mutual agreements outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that we all signed at the beginning of your Mighty Milers program.

Program Evaluation

The first 10-week evaluation period begins on the program start date that is in your MOU. The expectation is that your running sessions will start on that date.

After each evaluation, you will receive a letter rating your program as Outstanding, Satisfactory, or Needs Improvement. In the case of a "Needs Improvement" rating, your Regional Coordinator will work with you to make your program more successful. Mighty Milers programs rated "Satisfactory" meet these basic requirements:

  • Each student must run twice a week (we suggest scheduling at least three running sessions a week to ensure kids have the opportunity to run twice)
  • Students must run at least half a mile per session; students in pre-K, kindergarten, first grade, or adaptive PE should run at least a quarter mile per session
  • Student mileage in STRIDES must be updated at least once every two weeks

Program Requirements

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) contains the requirements needed for your site to successfully implement and maintain the program. Please read it carefully and be aware of its contents. Here is a review of the responsibilities each site agrees to in the MOU:

  • Identify a key person at the site/school to serve as Site Coordinator
  • Communicate with Regional Coordinators on a regular basis and return phone calls and emails promptly
  • Ensure that a trained teacher/faculty member attends every session or finds a suitable substitute when necessary
  • Cancel a session only when absolutely necessary
  • Ensure that each child runs or walks 2 to 5 times a week for at least a half mile per session (except for Pre-K, kindergarten, and adaptive PE students, for whom a quarter mile per session is recommended)
  • Keep an accurate record of each student's mileage and update mileage in STRIDES once a week or at a minimum once every two weeks
  • Engage at least 200 students in the program if your school is located in NYC; 50 students if your school is located outside of NYC or yours is a NYC-based community center
  • Be aware of students with medical problems including asthma and follow site/school policies with regard to student health and safety
  • Ask teachers to demonstrate the use of Mileage Meters to kids, both in the classroom and online, and ensure that each student sets personal running goals for the school year
  • Encourage students to run mileage totaling more than 2 marathons if program logistics allow for it
  • Keep all class mileage meters up-to-date
