Mighty Milers Application Only Open for New York City Sites

At this time, Mighty Milers spots for the 2016-2017 school year are only open for schools and organizations located within the five boroughs of New York City.  Those entities may apply or renew their program online.  For schools and organizations located outside of New York City, please email [email protected] to be placed on a priority list for the 2017-2018 school year.

Mighty Milers School-Year Application Now Open

The Mighty Milers application for the 2016-2017 school year is now open for all school and after-school sites in New York City and throughout the 50 states. New applicants, please create an account in STRIDES to apply for the program; we trust you'll find it user-friendly. Sites renewing from the 2015-2016 school year will find the STRIDES application easier than ever—simply use your current STRIDES password and your information will be prepopulated.

Mighty Milers at PS 244 in Flushing Win Miles for Books Grand Prize!

At an assembly on June 1st at P.S. 244 In Flushing, Queens, the 20 third grade Mighty Milers were acknowledged for being selected as this year’s grand prize winner of NYRR's Miles for Books initiative (out of 366 schools that registered) for running the most miles per student during the month of March - 187 miles.

Going the Extra Mile at MS 514M

Mighty Milers at MS 514M New Design Academy put a new spin on their running session by hosting a color run. They designed fun cheer signs and used a mix of food coloring and water to spray runners at every quarter mile!

Guaranteed entry into the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon is available for Coaches and Sites Coordinators!

To qualify, you must have an officially enrolled Mighty Milers or Young Runners program, and you must enter your roster(s) as well as your miles (for Mighty Milers) or practice attendance (for Young Runners) in STRIDES by December 1, 2014. Each qualifying site may claim up to two guaranteed, non-complimentary marathon entries for the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon. Find out more on the FAQ page.

Mighty Milers At Capacity Outside NYC

The 2014-2015 Mighty Milers program spots for schools outside of New York City are now filled. If you wanted to have a Mighty Milers program and are located outside the NYC metro area, please visit us again in August when the application for 2015-2016 will be open. If you are based in a New York City school or community center and interested in a Mighty Milers program, you may apply at strides.nyrr.org.

Grant Opportunities For The 2014-2015 School Year

Action for Healthy Kids has announced its school grant opportunities for the 2014-2015 school year! Awards range from $500 to $5,000 in support of school breakfast and physical activity programs. The USATF Foundation is offering funding for equipment, uniforms, meet fees, travel, facility rental, staff and volunteer training, and outreach. Click here to apply. The deadline for the first round of 2014 grant consideration is March 15.

ING Run For Something Better Grants Are Now Available

Kick off 2014 with a new physical education grant!

ING U.S., in partnership with AAHPERD, is providing a minimum of 60 grants of $3,500 each to qualifying schools in 2014. To learn more, including eligibility requirements and how to apply, visit www.aahperd.org/run. The deadline to apply is May 15, 2014, at 11:59 p.m.

Find Your Balance Challenge Grants

Improve your school’s physical education and nutrition programs by finding a healthy energy balance!

The Find Your Balance Challenge is open to elementary school classrooms in grades K-5 and rewards student teams for taking steps toward achieving energy balance in their school’s community. Grants range from $5,000 to $30,000! Click here to apply. The deadline is January 31, 2014.

Next month Mighty Milers can earn books with their feet! NYRR will convert March miles into new books for school or classroom libraries. The more you run the more you get. Don’t worry about signing up. All sites registered in STRIDES as of March 1 are automatically entered in Miles for Books.

Millrose Games Fastest Kid on the Block 55-Meter Dash Trials

Some of the best runners in the world will compete at the Millrose Games next month and your child could be a part of it! The Fastest Kid on the Block 55-Meter Dash has long been a highlight of the event for the metro area's youngest runners and their families. If your speedster will be 8 years old or younger on February 16, 2013, consider signing them up for the Dash's qualifying trials that will take place at the Armory on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 4:30pm. 


Registration details

Participants' parents must register online by January, 13. The top 8 runners will be selected to participate in the Millrose Games. If a runner qualifies for the Millrose Games, a birth certificate along with the waiver will be required. New York Road Runners Youth and Community Services does not register participants for this event.

Update: Run with Champions Canceled

UPDATE: Tuesday, October 10, 8:00PM EDT

Due to Hurricane Sandy and the resultant closing of schools, we are cancelling Thursday’s NYRR Run with Champions. We appreciate your planning to attend and we are very sorry that conditions preclude holding the event this year.  Regardless, we will send the event T-shirts and medals to your school next month as inspirations to your students. We hope you will take full advantage of other special events that occur during the school year and, of course, continue your running programs at full throttle.

The location for Run with Champions, being held  on Thursday Novmber 1, has been switched to the Armory at 216 Fort Washington Avenue.

For Site Coordinator Donna Thompson at Heard-Mixon Elementary in Covington, GA, it’s not just Mighty Milers who meet their goals. “All but one of our teachers walk or run with the Mighty Milers during recess,” Donna told us. Teacher Maria Hargrove even ran her first marathon in a Mighty Milers shirt.

After starting their Mighty Milers program in October 2011, the runners at PS 321 in Brooklyn, NY took off! Today, close to 690 Mighty Milers at this elementary school have run 64,000 miles, with the average of more than three miles per week per runner.
