Coaching Directory

NYRR’s coaching staff have made the Olympic Trials, set national masters records, coached teams to high school and college championships, and designed coaching programs that have helped thousands of New York City Marathon entrants and other runners get to the next level. They’re available for training advice and support in Group Training, via weekly Facebook live chats, and via e-coaching (for purchasers of some levels of our marathon and half-marathon training plans). Gordon Bakoulis

Gordon Bakoulis has coached thousands of runners at all levels since 1985. She is certified as a running coach by the Road Runners Club of America. The founding coach of Athena New York women's running team, Gordon has also coached with NYRR, Craftsbury Running Camp, and Maine Running Camp.

Stuart Calderwood

Stuart Calderwood has coached runners of all levels, from beginners to Olympic Trials qualifiers, for more than 30 years. During his 11 years as a head cross-country coach in California, his Laguna Beach High School boys' team won the 1989 state championship and his Orange Coast College men’s team won the 1988 South Coast Conference Championship. Steve Mura

Steve Mura is a coach of the NYRR Virtual Trainer program, NYRR Group Training and coordinates the NYRR Pace Team. He has run six marathons, with a personal best of 3:03:04; he set his half-marathon personal best of 1:24:22 at the 2015 Airbnb Brooklyn Half. Steve received his Road Runners Club of America certification in 2014 and has coached hundreds of runners in person and online.

John Honerkamp

John Honerkamp has coached runners of all ages and abilities for 15 years. He was an assistant coach at St. John's University (Queens, NY) for five years, working with middle- and long-distance runners, and was the recruiting coordinator for all events. A 1998 graduate of St. John's, Honerkamp was an eight-time All-Big East and six-time All-East (IC4A) athlete while running for the Red Storm.

Kimberly Harrison

Kimberly Harrison majored in Exercise Science and studied coaching and psychology at Ithaca College, where she co-captained the lacrosse team. She holds a master's degree in Exercise Science from SUNY Cortland, and has recently shifted her coaching focus from lacrosse to running. Matthew Moran, PhD

Matthew Moran is an Assistant Professor and the director of Undergraduate Exercise Science at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. Before moving to Connecticut, he was the head Cross Country and Track & Field coach at SUNY Cortland from 2005-2008.
