Another scorcher was predicted, but that didn’t stop 5,056 participants from finishing the CPC Run for Central Park, a four-mile run/walk that supports the Central Park Conservancy in its much-appreciated work to keep our urban oasis beautiful. The temperature reached 82 degrees, but humidity was down a bit (53%), and slight breezes and shady trees kept the midsummer sun tolerable. The women of the New York Athletic Club and the men of West Side Runners (WSX) won the team races; Sebleledet Mariam and Kumsa Adugna Megersa, both of WSX, won the individual competitions in 22:22 and 19:02, respectively. Kids’ races for youngsters ages 2 to 12 followed the main event. In the spirit of the CPC’s mission, all awards for the race were earth-friendly, and the CPC will plant flowers throughout the park in honor of each race winner—thus making the CPC Run for Central Park literally the greenest race of the year.
