| Local runners proved themselves up to the challenge of world-class competition at the 2009 Healthy Kidney 10K. In a field that included six Olympians, Wegayehu Girma Tefera of Briarcliff Manor, NY, took fourth place overall in 28:40; he was followed closely by Stephen Chemlany and Worku Beyi, both of the Westchester Track Club (WTC). Aziza Aliyu, also of WTC, won the women’s race for the second straight year. The men of West Side Runners (WSX) and the women of the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) dominated the local open-division team competition. |
Wegayehu Girma Tefera, the younger brother of two-time Fred Lebow Runner of the Year Demesse Tefera, was the first local finisher—and fourth overall—in a world-class 28:40.

Literally right on Tefera’s heels was Stephen Chemlany of WTC in a blazing 28:41, good for fifth overall.

Worku Beyi of WTC, a frequent winner of local races, was a close third among locals and sixth overall in 28:42.

Tesfaye Girma (far right, #174) of the West Side Runners was fourth among locals and ninth overall in 28:46.

The fifth local finisher (10th overall) was Abraham Ng’etich of WTC in 28:57—a time fast enough to win about 98 percent of 10K road races.

This NYAC pack of (L to R) Mark Olivier (31:09), Jon-Paul Mandelburg (31:35), and Jonathan Severy (31:17) led their team to a third-place open-division finish.

Hector Rivera of The Running Company ran 31:20 to take 23rd place overall.

Paul Thompson, 43, of the Warren Street Social & Athletic Club (WS) continued his undefeated year among masters in NYRR races, running 32:05 for 29th overall.

Michael Cassidy helped his Greater New York Racing Team (GNY) to a fourth-place team finish with his 32:22 performance.

Matt Chaston ran 33:17 led his Urban Athletics team to a win over perennial powerhouse WS in the 40+ men’s division.

Richard Velasquez of Front Runners New York ran 35:51 to lead his team.

Alan Ruben of the Central Park Track Club ran 36:28 to take third in the 50+ division; CPTC remained undefeated in NYRR scoring events among 50+ teams.

Necdet Kaynak of Witold’s Runners was seventh in the 50-54 division with a time of 38:42.

Jose Bautista of Los Compadres ran 39:49—a 6:25-per-mile pace.

Andrew Rastrick was the second finisher for his Bridle Path Track Club in a time of 40:11.

Bobby Hutton of the New York Harriers (NYH) finished in 41:17.

Thomas Maile of the Taconic Road Runners was third in the 65-69 age group with a time of 43:44—fast enough to win the 60-64 division!

Jerry Megna of the Staten Island Athletic Club turned in a time of 49:04.

Aziza Aliyu of WTC won the women’s race in 33:38--the second-fastest time in the race’s history, behind only her 33:32 from 2008.

Hirut Mandefro took second in the women’s race, only three seconds behind the winner, in a time of 33:41.

Salome Kosgei of WTC was third among women in a time of 34:20.

Alemtsehay Misganaw, a three-time winner of this race, took fourth place in 34:24—her fastest in the race by 23 seconds.

Abbi Gleeson of NYAC ran 35:01 to finish fifth overall and lead her team to the open women’s title

Aileen Conlon was the ninth female overall in a time of 35:27. She led her CPTC team to a second-place open-division finish.

…and Yumi Ogita, 47, of CPTC finished one second later (38:50) to win the 45-49 division and lead her team to the 40+ women’s title.

Second in the 45-49 age group was Jane Lundy, 49, of TRR in a time of 40:54.

Paige Yellen of GNY finished third in the 30-34 age group in 40:46.

Lisa Swain of the North Jersey Masters was the top finisher in the women’s 50-54 age group in a time of 41:38.

Second place among women in the 50-54 age group went to Josephine Patten of the Rockland Road Runners, who ran 42:50.

Christa Wagner of NYH looked relaxed on the way to a 45:12 finish.
