May 16, 2009 [Race Coverage] [Results]
The day began with a Tunnel of Kids from P.S. 38 Roberto Clemente elementary school and the NYRR Foundation Mighty Milers program introducing the professional athletes. It ended with post-race festivities. In between was the 10K race, which was fun for locals, visitors, and professionals alike. More runners than ever before took part.

Defending champion Patrick Makau waved to the crowd with his friend from the NYRR Foundation Mighty Milers program.

The runners were off to a good start before the rain set in.

Little did they know, the humidity could only last so long.

Some morning showers didn’t stop the fans from cheering.

The runners were happy to have so much encouragement on their 10K loop in Central Park.

Even Superwoman showed up, and her cape proved helpful.

Rain or shine, runners were happy to be taking part.

The camaraderie was encouraging—Enrica Bianco (1:07:30) and Luigi Giancamilli (1:07:28) finished two seconds apart.

The crowds knew just when to cheer to keep the runners motivated.

Khalifa Hareb Al Alawi had a long trip—he came from the United Arab Emirates—and finished in 32:10.

Runners can’t help celebrating when the finish line is within their reach.

Congratulations were in order after a race well run!

Tadese Tola knew there was no one in sight when he finished in 27:48.

Local standout and frequent race winner Aziza Aliyu won the women’s race in 33:38.

The top three were proud to be running in New York for their countries.

Tola’s 27:48 was the new course record by 20 seconds.

Ariel Ferrera donated a kidney to his little brother, Lionel, six months ago. The UAE, which sponsors the race, gave them an award onstage.

The post-race fun included henna tattoos for race participants and their friends and family.

The day’s celebrations included talk of traveling to the UAE and the wonders that can be found there.

After the race it was time to enjoy recovery snacks, learn about the National Kidney Foundation’s cause, and collect goodies from the UAE.
