Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run and NYC Family Health Walk-A-Thon

The Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run and NYC Family Health Walk-A-Thon on August 22 got thousands of people moving on the streets of Harlem. NYRR partnered with the Harlem Chamber of Commerce to put on the event; several key political figures showed their support including New York state Senator Bill Perkins, New York City Councilman Robert Jackson, and Councilwoman Inez Dickens.

More than 2,000 runners participated in the 5K.


Many participants in the 5K donned the bright green race T-shirt.


Jamie Gregory (left) and Robin Munn finished three minutes apart.


Runners circled Jackie Robinson Park and St. Nicholas Park.


David Rivas of Bald-Win Runners Club in NY finished the race in 29:23.


Early morning rain stopped just after the start, and the sun was shining as most runners finished.


Leila Richardson of Manhattan was pleased with her 37:12 effort.


Yasir Salem was happy to celebrate fitness in Harlem.


Genna Tufa of the Westchester Track Club ran lights-out to the tape in 15:34.


Serkalem Abrha of the West Side Runners won the women’s race in 17:40.


A “Bolt arms” salute to world record-holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica.

Members of local Harlem fitness teams were given special blue shirts to stand out.


Runners were encouraged to cool down after the event.


The NYC Family Health Walk-A-Thon followed a two-mile course that also circled both parks.


Members of Harlem Hospital Center were pleased to stroll peacefully through Harlem’s busy streets.


Members of the community came out to support the walkers and the runners.


The race honored Percy Sutton, the former Manhattan Borough president who supported the expansion of the New York City Marathon into the five boroughs.


Some walkers geared up by participating in up to four “Relive the Stress” sessions in Harlem parks on weekend mornings throughout the summer.


Working out with a friend always makes the miles go by faster.


Joining your significant other for a workout is a healthy way to bond.


The Walk-A-Thon was a pet-friendly event.
