ING New York City Marathon Tune-Up

In preparation for fall marathons, nearly 4,000 runners lined up in Central Park on September 28 for the ING New York City Marathon Tune-Up. At 7:00 a.m. they took off for 18 miles, most going a little slower than race pace, to test out their legs, practice their hydration, and try out new nutrition before their marathons.

Smiling despite the humidity, these participants were happy to have good company for their 18-mile long run.


There was time for a quick stretch before lining up on East Drive.


These runners will be well prepared for their marathons because they’re practicing their hydration techniques now.


Fred’s Team runners have the extra motivation of supporting the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.


At the start, it was anyone’s chance to shine.


Paul Ortolano was feeling good at close to 8:00-per-mile pace on Sunday morning.


Rita Ferreira of New York stayed hydrated as the miles added up.


John Henwood of the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) was feeling good right from the start.


Alfonso Polania of the West Side Runners was sixth in 1:46:38.


NYAC’s Kerin Hempel finished fourth in 2:02:35.


Kakushin Hirano of New York kept a solid pace to finish in 2:21:04.


The Front Runners New York placed second overall in the men’s team competition.


Anastasia Pedler smiled when she thought about helping out Fred’s Team by running the marathon this year.


Amber Locklear of Brooklyn was glad to be running in Central Park.


It felt good to work toward 18 miles with so many other motivated runners.


David Mendelsohn of the Brooklyn Road Runners Club ran a strong 2:26:43.


The Reservoir Dogs’ Louis Pahnke kept his pace below 8:00 per mile.


The mile markers along the course kept runners aware of their time and pace.


Henwood broke the tape in 1:38:22, after winning the Fitness Games 4-mile earlier this month.


Arien O’Connell of New York was the first female finisher in 1:57:49.
