New York Park to Park

Like the Naples Park to Park in Italy on June 8, the New York Park to Park on July 13 celebrated running and international friendship.


Runners from both countries made up the field of nearly 4,000 participants.


Giacomo Leone of Italy won the 1996 New York City Marathon. At age 37, he placed third in Sunday’s race in 32:02.


They’re off! Runners streamed across the start line on a balmy summer morning in Central Park.


In its second year, the Park to Park provided a great start to a summer Sunday in the city.


As in most NYRR races, runners lined up according to pre-determined paces, easing congestion on the course.


NYRR races are a social experience as well as a terrific workout and competitive outlet.


The race counted toward requirements for guaranteed entry to the ING New York City Marathon 2009.


A canopy of green stretched over the runners for much of the 6.2-mile course along the park’s roadways.


New Yorker Tim Shataye, 48, made his 49:35 performance look easy.


Ana Johnson of Manhattan was the 47th female finisher overall, in a time of 46:51.


With the finish line in view, it was time for an early celebration of a race well run.


Men’s winner Oleksander Holovnytskyy broke the tape in 31:31, an excellent time for the warm conditions.


Shaueen Garrahan was the runaway women’s winner in a time of 36 flat.


Proud of the tradition of great Italian champions of the New York City Marathon, Leone (center) posed for a post-race photo with fans.


Renowned Italian singer-guitarist Pino De Maio provided entertainment at the post-race festival.


Everybody in the pool! Once again this year, race entry included admission to Lasker Pool.


This finisher is well on her way to post-race recovery.


With the day’s workout in the bag, these finishers were ready to relax and enjoy.


Like running, swimming is an activity meant to be shared with friends and family.
