| A star-studded field of Olympians, world champions, and former Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile winners finished the season in a whirlwind of excitement. Both races were nail-biters to the tape, as the lead positions yo-yoed until the finish mats. Even from the announcer’s stage, the men’s race was too close to call by sight at the tape. The top-two female finishers posted the fastest times in 18 years. |
The women’s field was filled with an almost equal number of veterans and freshman.
The runner-up last year, Amy Mortimer finished seventh in 4:30.9.
Rose Kosgei of Kenya was the early pacesetter, but finished third in 4:23.9.
Beijing 1500-meter competitors Lisa Dobriskey and Shannon Rowbury pulled away from Kosgei in the final meters.
Dobriskey of Great Britian outkicked Rowbury in 4:18.6, the second-fastest Fifth Avenue Mile women’s finish to date.
One second behind Kosgei was 1500-meter Olympian Erin Donohue.
Sarah Jamieson of Australia finished sixth in her debut.
Sara Hall, the 2006 champion, finished eighth in 4:32.6.

At the halfway mark, Bernard Lagat, making his road racing debut, pulled to the front.

It was a neck-and-neck sprint to the finish between Lagat and Willis.

University of Michigan’s, Ron Warhurst, who coaches both Willis and Brannen, watched the race with his cross country team.
