Worku Beyi of the Westchester Track Club (WTC) was the first 21-year-old to cross the finish line; his 29:22 ranked him fifth overall.


A dominant presence on the local NYRR racing circuit, Demesse Tefera of WTC finished seventh in 29:25. His younger brother, Wegayehu Girma Tefera, was the first local and fourth overall in 29:20.


Abiyot Endale, winner of the Coogan’s Salsa, Blues & Shamrocks 5K in March, was the next WTC man to finish—his 29:54 earned him 15th place.


Stephen Chemlany finished 15 seconds after teammate Endale. His 30:09 effort earned him 16th place.


Rounding out the top five WTC finishers, Deresse Deniboba averaged 4:52 per mile to take 17th in 30:13.


Ethiopians dominated the top 20. Wellay Amare of the West Side Runners (WSX) was the seventh Ethiopian and the 19th man overall to cross the finish line. He ran 31:12.

New Zealand Olympian John Henwood of the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) followed up his win at the NYRR Half-Marathon Grand Prix Presented by Continental Airlines: Brooklyn with a 20th-place finish (31:20).


Kassahun Kabiso of WTC was a hair behind Henwood in 21st place, although they shared a finish time.


Edvard Gapak of the Warren Street Social & Athletic Club (WS) and Art Gunther of Upper Nyack, NY, also shared a finish time (31:21), but Gunther took the higher 22nd spot.


Paul Thompson (WS) was the top master (40+) for the third consecutive year. His 32:27 finish put him head and shoulders above the rest of his age group.

WTC women led the local pack as well; Aziza Aliyu won by a comfortable five-second margin in 33:32. Aliyu has won all seven of the NYRR race she has started in the past year.


Aliyu’s teammate Atalelech Ketema followed suit in 34:37. Ketema took the top spot at this year’s Scotland Run 10K and at last year’s NYRR Team Championships.


The ladies of the Nike Central Park Track Club (CPTC) won the team title. Aileen Conlon led her team to victory with her fourth-place finish in 35:33.


Maria Alves Veira (WSX) was the leader of her 30-39 age group; she finished fifth among women in 36:02.

Lesley Higgins of NYAC was sixth among women in 36:23.


Lauren Gustafson (CPTC) took the seventh spot in 36:51. She was the runner-up at the New York Junior League Mother’s Day 10-mile and the NYRR Half-Marathon Grand Prix Presented by Continental Airlines: Manhattan this year.


Katrina Waiger, CPTC, made a strong New York racing debut. She averaged 5:58 miles over the hilly course to finish eighth in 37 minutes flat.


Waiger’s CPTC teammate Loretta Kilmer shared her 37:00 finish time, but was given ninth place. She won the Scotland Run 10K in 2007.

Jennifer Busse of CPTC took the 10th spot in 37:37. She was the winner of this year’s NYRR Half-Marathon Grand Prix Presented by Continental Airlines: Bronx.


First place in the 45-49 age group, Zofia Wieciorkowska of WS finished 18th overall in 38:03.
