The Joe Kleinerman 10K, named for the late NYRR founder and longtime coach, capped off the NYRR’s race series among local teams. Several divisions’ final placings were still undecided before the race, including the women’s open championship, a yearlong rivalry between the Nike Central Park Track Club and the New York Athletic Club. On a chilly but windless morning, 4,844 runners took advantage of fast conditions on the Central Park loop. We congratulate them, and all 77 teams whose members made this year’s competition memorable.

In the women’s contest, Aziza Aliyu of the Westchester Track Club (WTC) bolted to an early lead…

…and won in 33:52, an event record. It was her fifth race victory in Central Park this year.

Aliyu’s WTC teammate Atalelech Ketema placed second in 35:23, just five weeks after her 2:44 at the ING New York City Marathon 2007.

Lisa Stublic of the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) was third in 35:31, leading her team to second place in the women’s open team competition.

Sara Vergote of the Nike Central Park Track Club (CPTC) grabbed fourth place with her 35:53 finish. CPTC placed 4-5-6-8-9 to easily win the women’s open team title and thus top the 2007 team-points standings.

Aileen Conlon of CPTC finished fifth in 35:54. She had led CPTC to seventh place at the USA Club Cross Country Championships in West Chester, OH, the previous day.

CPTC’s Kate Irvin, Conlon’s teammate at USA Club Cross, ran a strong second half to finish sixth in 35:59.

Arianne Field of NYAC broke up the CPTC juggernaut with her seventh-place finish in 36:09.

Lauren Esposito of CPTC was eighth in a time of 36:18…

…followed by teammate Loretta Kilmer, ninth in 36:36. CPTC placed six women in the top 10.

Jamie Sutherland of Shoe4Africa ran 37:03 and finished 13th. With only four finishers, the team did not score.

Jane Maxwell was the third NYAC woman to finish, and 15th overall, in 37:12.

Kelly Chin of Moving Comfort New York (MCNY) took 20th place in a time of 37:39…

…and her teammate Gordon Bakoulis, 46, was the first 40+ finisher, stopping the clock at 38:01. MCNY won the female masters division and was third in the open.

The second masters finisher was Zofia Wieciorkowska, 44, whose 38:07 led the Warren Street Social & Athletic Club (WS) to fourth place in the open division and fifth in the masters.

Christine Glockenmeier followed WS teammate Wieciorkowska in 38:40, good for 29th place.

Fiona Bayly, 40, of Urban Athletics was the third masters finisher; her time was 39:16.

Cristina Lopez, 44, of West Side Runners ran 40:33 to lead her team to third place in the female masters division and 10th among open teams.

Rockland Road Runners’ Laura DiMarino, 41, was the 50th woman finisher overall. Her time, 40:45, is evidence of the depth of the field.

Kate Sunbury of Hellgate Road Runners ran 42:39, good for 67th place.

Amy Chepaitis, 41, a member of the Brooklyn Queens Express team, ran 45:26.

The Greater New York Racing Team (GNY) included Yvonne Franck, 67, who finished in 55:37 and led the 60+ GNY women to a third-place finish.

CPTC runners celebrate their strong showing—and a fabulous year.

GNY’s Mary McGrath (44:20), Katherine Van Itallie (45:28), and Shelly Glover (43:47) smile and bond as only runners and teammates can.
