NYRR Marathon Training Package

NYRR's Marathon Training Packages are designed to help runners at all levels prepare for the ING New York City Marathon or another fall marathon. Directed by longtime NYRR Running Classes program directors Bob and Shelly Glover and staffed by a team of expert coaches, the packages provide a complete program to support any runner’s effort to prepare for and complete a marathon. The 14-Week Program


Basic

  • One session per week (Tuesday or Thursday) of NYRR’s Running Class speed-training for 14 weeks plus six bonus weeks
  • One Wednesday lecture, a Q&A session, and a group training run of four to six or more miles, each week for 14 weeks
  • One ING New York City Marathon 2009 ASICS Technical Training Shirt
  • One autographed copy of the best-selling The Competitive Runner’s Handbook by Bob and Shelly Glover
  • One ING New York City Marathon ASICS Training Hat

$399 for members, $449 for non-members


Premium

  • All of the Basic package elements, plus the following:
  • A Timex ING New York City Marathon watch
  • A guaranteed entry to the ING New York City Marathon Tune-Up race on September 27, 2009
  • A guaranteed entry to the NYRR Half-Marathon Grand Prix Presented by Continental Airlines: Staten Island race on October 11, 2009

Days

  • One session per week of NYRR’s Running Classes (speed-training) for 14 weeks plus six bonus weeks
    • Tuesday starts 8/4; ends 12/15
    • Thursday starts 8/6; ends 12/17
  • One Wednesday lecture, a Q&A session, and a group training run of four to six or more miles, each week for 14 weeks
    • Wednesday starts 8/5; ends 11/4

 


Program Format


Tuesday or Thursday:
speed training (intervals, tempo runs, fartlek, hill training) to improve pace and form. Classes meet at 6:15, 6:30, or 6:45 p.m., depending on your pace.


Wednesdays:
Lecture, Q&A, and a steady-paced training run for mileage

6:00 p.m.—doors open,  individual time with Coach Shelly Glover and Coach Bob Glover
6:15–6:30—Q&A with Coach Shelly Glover and Coach Bob Glover
6:30–6:45—marathon lecture by Coach Shelly Glover
6:45–8:15—steady-paced training run of four to six or more miles, in pace groups

    • There will be no switching between Tuesday and Thursday class sessions.
    • Two sessions per week of NYRR Running Class speed-training is available at additional charge. (Please contact the coach on-site to register for the extra session.)
    • Merchandise will be shipped approximately two weeks after the start of the program. Autographed copies of The Competitive Runner’s Handbook will be distributed in the Wednesday class.

    Program Directors

    Classes are led by experienced group coaches who are trained and supervised by head coaches Bob and Shelly Glover. Coaches are available to answer individual questions before, during, and after classes.

    The Founder and Director of NYRR’s Running Class program (begun in 1978), Coach Bob Glover has taught thousands of runners of all levels, helping many go from beginners to ING New York City Marathon finishers. Shelly Glover, MA, an exercise physiologist and EMT, has co-directed the classes for 20 years. Combined, they have run more than 50 marathons. They often place in their age groups in NYRR races. Bob and Shelly are co-authors of the best-selling The Runner’s Handbook, The Competitive Runner’s Handbook, and The Runner’s Training Diary.
