NYRR Marathon Training Package
Choose the Right Level
Please register for the appropriate level class, according these guidelines. Choose the level that best represents your running ability in the Speed Session on either a Tuesday or Thursday. We will group you on site at the Wednesday session according to your training pace. The Wednesday session starts at 6:30 p.m.; see below for start times for the Tuesday and Thursday sessions.
LEVEL 2: Basic Intermediate Tuesday or Thursday, Starts 6:15pm |
Requirement: Run for 5K-4 miles non-stop |
LEVEL 3: Intermediate Tuesday or Thursday, Starts 6:30pm |
Requirement: Race pace for 5K-4 miles of 10 to 11 minutes per mile |
LEVEL 4: Advanced Intermediate Tuesday or Thursday, Starts 6:30pm |
Requirement: Race pace for 5K-4 miles of 9 to 10 minutes per mile |
LEVEL 5: Basic Competitive Tuesday or Thursday, Starts 6:45pm |
Requirement: Race pace for 5K-4 miles of 8 to 9 minutes per mile |
LEVEL 6: Competitive Tuesday or Thursday, Starts 6:45pm |
Requirement: Race pace for 5K-4 miles of 7 to 8 minutes per mile |
LEVEL 7: Advanced Competitive Tuesday or Thursday, Starts 6:45pm |
Requirement: Race pace for 5K-4 miles of 6 to 7 minutes per mile |
LEVEL 8: Super Advanced Competitive Tuesday or Thursday, Starts 6:45pm |
Requirement: Race pace for 5K-4 miles of faster than 6 minutes per mile |
2008 Dates and Times
The package’s speed sessions are on Tuesdays or Thursdays for 10 weeks starting August 5 or August 7; start times are listed above. You may only attend the nights for which you register. Please note that there is generally more space in the Thursday class.
The Wednesday session is for 14 weeks starting August 6 and ending with an “aftermarathon” clinic and celebration run on November 5.
6:30 p.m. – Training tips with coaches Shelly and Bob Glover
6:40 p.m. – Group training run by pace groups of 4 to 6+ miles
(Optional Q&A with coaches and shoe/clothing consultations begin at 6:00 p.m.)
As a special bonus, all registered participants of NYRR’s Marathon Training Package may also register, free of charge, for the NYRR Running Class 10-week session that begins October 14 or October 16. We will contact you with registration information about this NYRR Running Class session.
Location
All sessions meet at P.S. 6, located on East 81st Street between Park and Madison Avenues, and then go outdoors for workouts (usually in nearby Central Park). Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and close at 8:30 p.m. Please enter using the middle door on East 81st Street. Lecture is in the air-conditioned auditorium.
What to Wear/What to Bring
Come dressed to run. There is limited space in restrooms for changing. Clothing and valuables may be stored in a monitored area. No headphones or strollers.
Structure
All sessions meet in all weather conditions for approximately 75-90 minutes and provide a complete workout, including stretching exercises and running. All sessions are sorted into groups according to ability level. Please run with the appropriate group. You will be asked to switch groups if you are too fast or need to improve speed. Students are expected to follow all safety and administrative guidelines established by program directors. Participants must be at least 18 years old, unless permission is granted in advance by Bob Glover. No guests or trial classes.
