Race Scoring

Most New York Road Runners races are fully scored. Scored races that also count toward the nine races members need for the NYRR 9+1 Program are timed using the ChronoTrack D-Tag system. These races are indicated with an S and a Q on NYRR's event calendar.

In order for a race to qualify for the NYRR 9+1 program, a runner’s time must be scored by NYRR timing and marked as “finished” in our results. Disqualification or failure to finish the event will not count as a qualifying run.

NYRR scored events that are not marathon qualifiers, such as Armory meets and some cross country races, are scored using methods other than ChronoTrack D-Tag timing. Any necessary instructions will be given on site at those events, and results postings may be handled differently than described here. These races are indicated with an S on NYRR's calendar.

A race designated as a fun run or health walk is not scored; unless otherwise indicated, only the top three male and female finishing times will be recorded. Fun run participants should check their times on the clock as they cross the finish line. Participation in fun runs and health walks does not count toward earning guaranteed entry to the ING New York City Marathon.

Official Time

In all NYRR scored races, each participant's official time, the net time, is recorded from when a participant crosses the start mats to when he or she crosses the finish mats. This official time is used to establish the order of finish and to determine award winners. However, the first male and female runner to cross the finish line will always be the winner of the race.

Start mats will be removed 10 minutes after the start of the race unless otherwise indicated, after which net times will not be recorded. Some NYRR d-tag-timed races may have additional mats along the course. These additional split times will be provided along with the standard results.
