About the Camps
Team Running USA, created in 2001 as Team USA California, is part of the Running USA initiative, an association funded by major U.S. road races like the ING New York City Marathon, the Celestial Seasonings Bolder Boulder 10K, the Chevron Houston Marathon, and the Carlsbad 5000. Team Running USA resources include access to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in San Diego, and high altitude facilities in Mammoth Lakes, California. Coached by Terrance Mahon, Bob Larsen, and Joe Vigil, Team Running USA produced two medalists in the 2004 Olympic Games, men’s marathon silver medalist Meb Keflezighi and women’s marathon bronze medalist Deena Kastor. Founded in 2001 by Pat Goodwin, Team USA Minnesota is based in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The program strives to utilize local resources to improve post-collegiate American distance running and develop Olympians. Athletes are selected by Team USA Minnesota coach Dennis Barker and Team USA Minnesota's Board of Directors on the basis of a completed application, performance standards, previous accomplishments and competitive potential. The non-profit ZAP Fitness Center and Foundation opened its' doors in the spring of 2002. Founded by 2 Time Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifiers Zika and Andy Palmer (Z.A.P.), the Blowing Rock, NC based center supports 10 of the nation's up and coming young American post collegiate distance runners. The program provides its' athletes with room, board, health insurance, travel, a living stipend, coaching, as well as equipment through corporate sponsor Reebok. All the ZAP athletes reside full time at the 68 acre campus, which possesses a dining hall, bio-lab for physiological testing, weight room, apartments for the athletes, meeting rooms as well as a 24-bed lodge used for ZAP's summer adult running vacations and corporate retreats.
