The purpose of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Men’s Marathon race was to choose the three-man Olympic marathon team for Beijing next summer. But for the 134 men who started the race in Central Park on November 3, the race was a chance to perform to the best of their ability on the world stage and to be a part of what was arguably the greatest gathering of talent in American men’s marathoning history. In this gallery we salute all the race finishers for pursuing their Olympic dreams here in New York City.
We attempted to photograph every finisher, but unfortunately we missed two of them: Trent Briney, a Hansons team member who was fourth in the 2004 Olympic Trials, finished 75th in 2:26:29, and the 104th and final finisher was Thomas McGlynn, 35, of Burlingame, CA, who saw the race through even though it didn’t go as well as he would have liked. |

In the main pack before halfway, behind a group of Hansons runners, were (left to right) Allen Wagner, 27, of San Diego, CA (25th, 2:18:25—a personal best); Ryan Meissen, 29, of Mukwonago, WI (60th, 2:23:38); and Chris Lundstrom, 31, of Minneapolis, MN (37th, 2:19:21). |
