For 27 years, New York Road Runners has been bringing athletes to Manhattan's Fifth Avenue to burn up 5,280 feet of pavement along this famous thoroughfare. Last year's Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile welcomed professional men's and women's fields along with 11 heats for open runners and a wheelchair/hand cycle race.

The fourth running of the first-ever marathon (26.2 miles) for women over age 40 takes place in early spring in Central Park. The event also includes a half-marathon (13.1 miles) for two-woman teams with at least one team member over 40.
