Fifty of the nation’s best distance and middle-distance runners lined up in Central Park on March 18 for the USA Men’s 8K Championships, hosted by NYRR. |

The race, which was delayed 24 hours due to a severe snow and ice storm, took place under chilly, blustery conditions. |

Defending champion Jorge Torres of Boulder, CO, took an early lead, flanked by New York City’s Anthony Famiglietti and Abdi Abdirahman of Tucson, AZ. |

Abdirahman, who finished second in the USA 8K Championships in 2005 and third in 2003, pressed the pace in the middle miles today. The course covered nearly three 1.7-mile loops over gently rolling terrain. |

Famiglietti drew even with Abdirahman just past the 5K mark. Both men represented the U.S. on the track at the 2004 Athens Olympics. |

"Fam," who trains daily in Central Park, used his familiarity with the course to run a superbly paced race. He drew away from Abdirahman over the final mile…. |

…and broke the tape in 22:35 to win the national championship and $11,000 in prize and bonus money. |

Abdirahman ran strongly to finish second in 22:41. He will return to New York on November 3 for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Men’s Marathon, which will also take place in Central Park. |

Asmerom, of Oakland, CA, held on to claim the third-place spot in 22:48. |

Dan Browne of Portland, OR, also a 2004 Olympian, was fourth in 22:52. |

Ed Moran of Williamsburg, VA, finished fifth, posting a time of 22:54. |

Max King of Bend, OR, ran strong, finishing sixth in 22:57. |
Torres, the 2006 USA 10,000-meter champion, crossed the line in 23:02, good for seventh place. |
Rod Koborsi of Washington, DC, held on for eighth place (23:04). |
Seth Summerside of Fayetteville, AR, grabbed ninth place with his 23:07 finish. |

Rounding out the top 10 was Patrick Tarpy of Providence, RI. |

Exactly 50 men finished the championships race. Many will be back for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in November, and welcomed this opportunity to preview the course. |

Famiglietti and Abdirahman, friends and occasional training partners, made the race exciting for spectators, fellow competitors, and each other. |

The top three (l-r): Abdirahman (second), Famiglietti (first), Asmerom (third). |
