The Embassy of the United Arab Emirates presents the Healthy Kidney 10K, benefiting the National Kidney Foundation, Inc.
The National Kidney Foundation, Inc., a major volunteer health organization, seeks to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.
Kidney Health
Kidney disease is a global health epidemic. With obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure on the rise, individuals across the globe are at increased risk for chronic kidney disease, which multiples the prospect of premature death.
In the United States alone:
• 26,000,000 Americans have chronic kidney disease and millions more are at risk.
• Currently 341,000 Americans with kidney failure need dialysis treatment to stay alive, and nearly 75,000 are currently waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant.
• Because symptoms may not appear until the kidneys are actually failing, many people with kidney damage remain unaware of the disease and do not take steps to protect the health of their kidneys.
• If you have high blood pressure, diabetes or a family history of kidney disease, you're at risk for kidney disease.
• African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and senior are at increased risk.
• Early detection can help prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure, and three simple tests can check the health pf your kidneys. Ask your doctor, or go to www.kidney.org for information about free kidney screenings.
You can make a difference in the fight against kidney disease by helping us raise funds to support the National Kidney Foundation and its local and nationwide public and professional education programs, patient advocacy and services, and research initiatives. Go to www.kidney.org to start fund-raising for the Healthy Kidney 10K or to make a direct contribution to the NKF.
The United Arab Emirates Embassy is the primary sponsor of the Healthy Kidney 10K to benefit the National Kidney Foundation, Inc., in appreciation of American doctors and U.S. excellence in the kidney transplant arena. Former UAE president Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan benefited from U.S. expertise, knowledge, and research, when he received a kidney transplant in 2000. Among his many honors and accomplishments, he was most proud of being a kidney transplant survivor.
