Members of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) team lined up to race in support of the National Kidney Foundation. Former UAE president Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan benefited from U.S. expertise and research when he received a kidney transplant in 2000.

The top qualifiers contemplate the race ahead: Martin Fagan, Matt Gonzales, Craig “Buster” Mottram, and Macharia Yuot. The match-up between two-time Healthy Kidney defending champion Mottram and 2005 USA 10K champ Dathan Ritzenhein garnered much media attention.

And they’re off! Ritz and Buster lead the masses’ charge.

A few minutes later, runners continue to pour past the line.

Yi-Joo Kwon, 61, Korean Road Runners Club, was all smiles.

Elena Arredondo, 31, and Rose Pasqua, 25, happily trucking along from the start.

Jesus Algarin, 54, waves a gesture that means: a)  peace;  b) victory;  c) “This is so much fun that I want to do two races today”; d) all of the above.

Fellow competitors include Stephanie Sherpherd, 23, Carla Brathwaite, 27, and Roy Han, 24, New York Fliers member.

Alyssa Hannah, 35, gives a preview of her crossing-the-finish-line pose, while behind her Blake Redding, 24, and Ryan Sylvester, 32, discuss the finer points of race strategy (or something equally compelling).

Elisabeth Gennis, 24, ahead of Joshua Levine, 53, both clearly experiencing a runner’s high.

A record 5,413 runners finished the race.

Putting on the Ritz: Dathan crosses the finish line in 28:08, taking the 10-year-old Central Park record with him.

Winner among women, Alemtsehey Misganaw, 26, Westchester Track Club, clocks in at 35:31. She has run all three editions of this race.

Two runners from the UAE team, Saif Hamad Salem al Rashedi, 30, and Bader Hareb Saif al Alawi, 23, run hand-in-hand.

Cheering from the sidelines encouraged runners at all levels.

Aye aye! Mohamed al-Kuwaiti, 31, finishes smiling in 46:47.

Erik Sulcs, 39, rehydrates while Andrejs Lazda, 34, New York University, mugs for the camera.

Thumbs up from Sachie Sumi, 33.

As the runners rocked out on the course, the band played on.

Stephanie Fernandez, 28, down from New Haven, up on shoulders.

Leo Schonhaut may be 77, but he can still do 10K in under an hour.

The top female finishers (l to r):  Michelle Rorke (third), Caroline Bierbaum (second), and Alemtsehay Misganaw (first).

The top male finishers: Demesse Tefera (third), Dathan Ritzenhein (first), and Craig Mottram (second).
