Race FAQs

There are always rules of the road. At NYRR, we emphasize safety first, and then the rules of competition to keep the fairness of our organized events.

We have developed these procedures to ensure integrity and safety and a fair and impartial process.

Awards

New York’s running scene is one of the most competitive in the world. To recognize such talent, we post an Honor Roll of the top 10 finishers in each age group at all our scored races.

At weekly races from April through November, age-group awards are available on site at the awards table after the race. Runners can check the awards sheet at the table and collect their award. Awards not collected on site will be available at NYRR. For races from December through March, age-group awards are available for pickup at NYRR only; please contact awards@nyrr.org to arrange award pickup at NYRR. After 20 days, awards are recycled.

Awards are available in the following categories, unless otherwise indicated. Please note that in some races that include professional athlete fields, the number of awards to top finishers may be different:

Team Awards

Awards are given annually to the top men’s and women’s teams. Visit New York Area Running Clubs for information about declaring a club affiliation and club scoring and awards.

Runner of the Year Awards

At NYRR’s annual Club Night celebration, we present awards to our Runners of the Year  (overall and for each age group), the top teams in our yearly team competition, and in other special categories. The Awards Committee is comprised of NYRR staff and Board of Directors members and team representatives from the local running community. To be eligible for these awards, a runner must be a member of NYRR for at least six months of the calendar year, including at the time of nomination, and must complete at least six fully scored NYRR races across a range of distances in the calendar year. (Track races are not included.) If you change age groups during the year, you’re considered part of the age group that you were in for the majority of the year.

For each age category, Runner of the Year candidates are ranked according to their best performances throughout the year. These rankings, through the top 20 in each age group, are reviewed by the Awards Committee, with special consideration made for head-to-head competition and performances at a range of distances. The Fred Lebow Runner of the Year Awards are given to the male and female runners who have exhibited the most consistently superior performances over a variety of races and distances.

Baggage, Security, and Lost & Found

New Enhanced Baggage Security Measures
As a result of enhanced security measures, we anticipate some delays with baggage check. Please consider not bringing a bag to check on race day.

  • If you wish to check a bag at the race, you will be given a clear drawstring bag and a numbered baggage label at number pickup (at NYRR and at the race venue on race day). You must use this bag, with label affixed, to check any personal items in the designated baggage area; all other bags will be confiscated. You may not place backpacks or personal bags inside the clear bag.
  • You will check your bag by handing it to an NYRR staff member at a designated baggage zone, organized by bib range. Runners will not be permitted to enter the baggage area.
  • NYRR and the NYPD reserve the right to search any bag at any time, both within and outside the baggage area.
  • Any bag left unattended in Central Park will be confiscated.
  • Runners are subject to security screenings at our toilet locations.
  • There will be no trash cans in the race vicinity. We encourage you to hand your trash to our volunteers and staff members.

Thank you for your cooperation with our effort to provide a safe event.
The Lost and Found is located in the Volunteer tent on race day. If you’ve lost an item, please check there; if  you find a lost item, please bring it there. Unclaimed items are brought to NYRR (9 East 89th Street); please visit us, call 212.860.4455, or e-mail mynyrr@nyrr.org

Entry Fees

At NYRR, we're committed to offering a world-class race experience to every runner at all of our events, at an affordable price. We do everything in our power to keep costs low while still maintaining our world-class standards for overall and medical safety and quality. For 2012, most of our weekly race entry fees have not changed; however we have increased entry fees for a few of our races, including the NYC Half, the ING New York City Marathon, the NYRR New York Mini 10K, the 5-Borough Series events, and the NYRR Fifth Avenue Mile Presented by Nissan. A portion of the increases are due to new fees for city services associated with staging our best-in-class events on New York City streets. We pay these fees in order to obtain necessary services, such as police support and traffic control, without which our events could not take place in the world’s greatest city for running. A smaller portion of the increases are due to increases in operating costs, including staging, transportation, and insurance, which are unavoidable when producing events in our incredible “stadium,” New York City.

Number Pickup

For most NYRR events, you’ll need to pick up your race number, D-Tag, and race souvenirs before the race. Number pickup usually starts the Thursday prior to the race at NYRR (9 East 89th Street, between Madison and Fifth avenues), but be sure to check the specific race listing to confirm details. Note that for the Brooklyn Half, NYC Half, the ING New York City Marathon, and some other events, pickup is in other locations. Pickup hours at NYRR are usually as follows:

• Thursday, 1:00–7:00 p.m.

• Friday, 1:00–7:00 p.m.

• Saturday, 11:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (for Sunday races)

Race-day pickup is generally available for an hour on race morning—at the race location in warm weather, or at NYRR if it’s cold. Race-day pickup is usually busy, so be sure to allow yourself plenty of time if you choose this option.

Except for specific races such as the ING New York City Marathon and NYC Half, no ID or confirmation is required for number pickup. Someone else can pick up your materials if that person knows your birth date or age (sometimes two or more entrants have the same name).

Prize Money

NYRR offers more than $1,000,000 in open and member prize money each year. To qualify for member prize money, you must be a member of NYRR for at least three months before the race (unless otherwise noted). Runners with multiple eligibility for open, NYRR member, masters, and/or 50+ age-graded categories will be awarded the highest prize money amount only, except in specified cases. Any athlete who has served a doping suspension of two months or longer is not eligible for prize money in NYRR races.

Race Scoring & Results

Most NYRR races are fully scored. Scored races that also count toward the nine races that members need for the NYRR 9+1 Program are timed using the ChronoTrack system; you can check a race's scoring status by hovering over the race name on NYRR’s event calendar.

To qualify for the NYRR 9+1 program, your time in a race must be scored by NYRR and must appear in our finisher results. If you are disqualified or fail to finish the event, you won’t receive 9+1 credit for the race.

Scored events that don’t count toward guaranteed entry to the ING New York City Marathon, such as track meets and some cross country races, are not scored using ChronoTrack. Instructions will be given on-site at those events, and results postings may be different than described here. Fun runs and health walks are not scored; usually only the top three male and female finishing times will be recorded, so if you’re not up at the front, check your time on the finish-line clock.

NYRR posts searchable race results on this website right after the race. Our online results include all finishers, all award winners, and race statistics such as finisher totals by age group and gender.

Your official (net) finishing time is recorded by the ChronoTrack system from the starting line to the finish line. This time determines the order of finish and award winners—except first place overall, which always goes to the first man and woman to cross the finish line. (Unless otherwise noted, timing mats will be removed 10 minutes after the start of the race, after which net times will not be recorded.)

Age-grading

Our results also include each finisher’s age-graded place, time, and performance percentage: Each runner’s time is adjusted to that of an open-division participant using a factor for age and gender. Older participants’ times are adjusted downward, creating a “level playing field.” [Age-grading standards] Age-graded percentage is the ratio of a world-class time for a runner’s age and gender divided by the runner’s actual time; 100% is approximately world-record level, 90% is world class, 80% is national class, and 70% is regional class. (Age-graded results are provided to allow participants to compare themselves to these standards and to other runners; they don’t affect race awards.)

Race Results History

For NYRR members, individual race results are available as part of your NYRR Member Race History. Results from all New York City Marathons are available to the public in the Marathon Results Archive.

Race Timing

This race is timed using the ChronoTrack timing system. You will receive a B-tag timing device embedded in your bib when your pick up your race number. If you run the race without your bib properly attached, your time will not be recorded and you will not be listed in the results or receive 9+1 credit for finishing the race. The B-tag is disposable; it will not be collected after the race.

Rules of Competition

NYRR races are organized and directed under USA Track & Field rules and regulations. Entrants must also comply with City of New York Parks & Recreation and NYRR rules. NYRR reserves the right to change the details of its races.

NYRR rules and regulations

• For participants’ safety and to satisfy insurance requirements, no skates, strollers (including running strollers), or animals are permitted in NYRR events.

• Participants in events in city parks must stay within course boundaries, as designated by traffic cones, barriers, and/or other markings, at all times. Failure to do so may result in disqualification and ineligibility for future NYRR events, including the ING New York City Marathon.

• In accordance with City of New York Parks & Recreation rules, please use only the toilet facilities provided.

• Participant numbers must be fully visible at all times, preferably on the front of the torso.

• Use of headphones is strongly discouraged.

• Participants are advised not to invite anyone not officially registered for the event to join in any part of the race.

NYRR reserves the right to reject any entry and to disqualify and bar any individual from any NYRR event. This rejection/disqualification may be based on, but is not limited to: violation of the aforementioned rules; unsportsmanlike conduct; non-payment of race fees; competing with an unofficial number; competing with an official number or B-tag/D-tag assigned to another person; transferring or attempting to transfer an official number or B-tag/D-tag to, or to obtain such number or B-tag/D-tag from, another person; being paced during the race by a person not entered in the race; accepting assistance from non-race participants; crossing the finish line without having completed the entire course; and providing false information on the race entry form. Individuals disqualified from a race will be removed from the race results and may be barred from future NYRR events. NYRR reserves the right to change the details of the race.

For questions about these rules and regulations, please write to mynyrr@nyrr.org.

Seeded Corrals

NYRR races commonly have more than 5,000 participants, and to ease congestion at the start, runners are assigned to seeded corrals. Each corral contains 500 to 750 runners, who are assigned to a corral according to their per-mile pace, with faster runners in front. Each corral is color-coded corresponding to the color on the runners’ number bibs.

NYRR assign entrants to corrals before each race. Members with NYRR race histories will be assigned based on their history at the time that they register. Entrants without NYRR race histories will be assigned based on the estimated pace per mile that they provide on the race application. Runners signing up during number pickup must bring proof of their pace per mile or they will be assigned to the last corral. A recent copy of a runner’s NYRR race history, a race certificate, or a results page showing time and pace will be accepted.

Once a corral is assigned, it cannot be changed. Runners wishing to run together must go to the corral of the slower runner. Runners arriving late (less than 10 minutes before start time) to their corral must go to the last corral.

Important note: Seeded corrals help ensure that official entrants in NYRR races stay within the designated running lanes throughout the race, according to City of New York Parks & Recreation rules and NYRR rules. The official course will be fully delineated, and runners will be required to run inside the delineated lane. All runners must wear a race number, and that race number must be visible. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

Terms and Conditions

Once you have entered a race, your entry fees are non-exchangeable, non-transferable, and non-refundable, under any and all circumstances, including, but not limited to, cancellation of the event or of your participation, or change in the date, nature, or format of the event. An event may be cancelled or changed due to severe weather or other factors that threaten the safety of participants, staff, or volunteers. Cancellation or change of the date, nature, or format of an event may be mandated by governmental officials or otherwise be at the discretion of NYRR.

All NYRR races are capped.  Price and entry is subject to availability.

No credit cards accepted for race registration after number pickup begins. Cash or check only.

Members: If you are registering on event day, you must provide your NYRR member number to receive your member discount; otherwise you will be charged the non-member event fee.
