Local Competitive Teams

At NYRR, we support multple running clubs throughout the tri-state area. These teams provide a competitive spirit at many NYRR events, and there is a fierce rivalry for the NYRR Team Championships title every year.

Club Points Races

To foster healthy competition among New York area clubs, encourage excellence in running, and help boost NYRR race participation and spectator interest, NYRR and Club Council designate up to 11 NYRR scored races per year as club points races.

These races vary in distance. Clubs accumulate points based on their finishing places in these races. At the end of the year, each club's point totals in the 10 best races of the 11-race series (the lowest score for each club is automatically dropped) are added to determine the club's overall ranking for the year. The club with the most points is the winner, the club with the second-highest number of points places second, and so on. At NYRR's annual Club Night, the previous year's top clubs are honored and receive special awards.

Clubs can score points at club points races in 10 different divisions: men's and women's open A and B (all ages), men's and women's masters (age 40+), men's and women's veterans (age 50+), and men's and women's super veterans (age 60+).

The composition of teams at club points races (other than the NYRR Team Championships) is as follows:

Open men A & B

5 runners

Open women A & B

5 runners

Masters men

3 runners

Masters women

3 runners

Veteran men

3 runners

Veteran women

3 runners

Super Veteran men

3 runners

Super Veteran women

3 runners

The composition of teams at the NYRR Team Championships is as follows:

Open men A & B

10 runners

Open women A & B

10 runners

Masters men

5 runners

Masters women

3 runners

Veteran men

3 runners

Veteran women

3 runners

Super Veteran men

3 runners

Super Veteran women

3 runners

Only members of established and NYRR-recognized running teams may enter the NYRR Team Championships; NYRR membership by itself is not enough to qualify. In addition, entrants must have completed at least one NYRR scored/qualifying race between September 1 and the current year’s NYRR Team Championships for the team for which they will be scoring in the NYRR Team Championships, and they may not have competed for that team until 90 days after competing for another team. If a participating team has not fielded a full team in their division (men’s and women’s open, 40+, 50+, 60+) at a prior NYRR team-points race since January 1 of the current calendar year, the team may not score in that division at the NYRR Team Championships.

At the NYRR New York Mini 10K (a women-only race), an open team consists of five runners, a masters team consists of three runners, and a veteran team consists of three runners.

Runners may score in more than one division. For example, a 50-year-old finisher could score in the open, masters, and veteran divisions. As in all NYRR scored races, a club's finishing place in a club points race is determined by adding the finishing times of the scoring members, as outlined above.

The top-finishing clubs in each division are awarded points on the following scale:

First place

15

Second place

12

Third place

10

Fourth place

8

Fifth place

6

Sixth place

5

Seventh place

4

Eighth place

3

Ninth place

2

10th place

1

Double points are awarded at the NYRR Team Championships.

Note: The Wannabees and Former Track Stars team has been disqualified as a team for the 2012 season.
