Another Year of Celebrating Kidney Health

There was much to celebrate at the 13th annual UAE Healthy Kidney 10K. A favorite on the New York Road Runners calendar since 2005, the race is a partnership with the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates to benefit the National Kidney Foundation in appreciation of American doctors and U.S. excellence in the kidney transplant arena. A field of elite runners from around the world led more than 8,600 finishers, an event record, through Central Park on a perfect spring morning.

Both the men’s and women’s pro races were nail-biters, with the top contenders in a tight pack for most of the 6.2-mile course. In the men’s race, first-time UAE Healthy Kidney 10K entrant Sam Chelanga of the United States won in a sprint finish over Thomas Longosiwa of Kenya, with both men timed in 28:21. Stephen Sambu of Kenya was third in 28:31.

The women’s race saw Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia narrowly prevail over Magdalene Masai of Kenya, 31:37 to 31:44. Monicah Ngige of Kenya also broke 32 minutes, running 31:55 for third place. Natosha Rogers of the United States was seventh in 32:46.

The second NYRR team-points event of 2017, the race brought out huge numbers of local club members, many of whom took advantage of the great conditions to chase PRs. And thanks to the sunny spring weather, much of the course was lined with enthusiastically cheering spectators.
