Few runners at today’s Washington Heights Salsa, Blues, and Shamrocks 5K were talking about the impending snowstorm; they were too busy living it up in the Heights! The music was eclectic, the bagels were green, and spirits were high.
If you needed some motivation to work out this cold Sunday in NYC, all you had to do was head to the Heights for instant inspiration. Seniors from the Union Settlement Association’s Jefferson Center in Harlem were raring to go; Mary Lapetina, 87, and Josie Cruz, 70, pinned on their bibs for their second consecutive Washington Heights 5K. Warming up right next to the seniors were approximately 700 children from 40 different schools and teams across the five boroughs.
