Born in Brooklyn, Harry Murphy (1914-1993) was a founding member of NYRR in 1958 and co-founded the Prospect Park Track Club (PPTC) in 1970. A sign maker by trade, Murphy painted countless signs for NYRR events, earning the nickname "The Brush." As a runner, coach, and mentor, Murphy is remembered by PPTC members for his innovative workouts and for helping many to develop a love for running. Those runners who did not have the privilege of knowing Murphy before he passed away in 1993 can celebrate his legacy on the trails of Van Cortlandt Park at this race.
Please note: NYRR cross country races are not 9+1 qualifiers.
Registration for Cross Country Races
Each of NYRR's cross country races allows for 300 runners to register online. When a cross country race reaches its online capacity, this will be noted on the race page. Additional runners will be able to sign up at the event. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions about registration.

Start on "The Flats," a wide field bordering Broadway, and head south. Turn left/east to pass the Van Cortlandt Mansion along the southern edge of The Flats, then left/north again to enter the woods at the Cow Path entrance. Ascend the trail as you continue north.
As the trail parallels the Henry Hudson Parkway, make the right turn toward the Back Hills. Make this complete loop, then head back toward The Flats. The trail is mostly downhill and flat. Exit the woods with about three-quarters of a mile to go and continue to the finish along Broadway beyond the Tortoise and Hare statue.
