Due to adverse weather conditions, and to ensure a safe event for our runners, the outside 86th floor observatory deck has been closed. The race will continue on time and will finish indoors on the same 86th floor. Use MTA Trip Planner to plan your trip.
Run like King Kong in the ultimate uphill race: 86 stories to the top of the world's most famous skyscraper! The brainchild of Fred Lebow, the Run-Up has been on the NYRR annual calendar since 1978. The fastest runners climb the 1,576 steps in about 10 minutes.
Groups of runners will start from the lobby in a time-trial format from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. Details and timeline are here.
Note: MarathonFoto will not be on site to capture participant race photos. NYRR photographers will be taking photos for our online event coverage, but we cannot provide these photos to individual runners, so please plan ahead to take your own celebratory photos at the top.
The race begins in the lobby of the Empire State Building (Fifth Avenue between 33rd and 34th streets). Runners climb 1,576 steps (86 floors) to the observation deck, nearly a quarter-mile above Fifth Avenue.
