The inaugural Staten Island Day was all about supporting the Staten Island community! Runners from the five boroughs and beyond celebrated Staten Island’s resilience and helped Hurricane Sandy recovery by racing, playing, and eating today. Net proceeds of the event—a minimum of $100,000—will be donated to the Siller Foundation and the Emergency Children’s Help Organization (ECHO) to help Staten Island rebuild.
The NYRR 5-Borough Series: Staten Island Half-Marathon was the fifth and final race of the year that earned local runners and NYRR members guaranteed entry to the NYC Half 2014 for doing four out of five races in the series.
The annual series is a favorite among local competitive runners who race for borough pride and also earn bragging rights for taking titles in other boroughs. Staten Island native Michael Cassidy defended his title with his third consecutive win in 1:07:15. Emiliano Garcia matched Cassidy’s pace for much of the race, and took second in 1:08:38, while Roberto Puente took third in 1:12:34.
