Kick off the New Year at the Midnight Run Presented by Emerald Nuts! Join the fun and celebrate with dancing (starting at 10:00 p.m.), a costume parade and contest (starting at 11:00 p.m.), and a 15-minute fireworks show as seen on foot. With a countdown to midnight beginning at 11:59 p.m., the 4-mile unscored run will begin on the stroke of midnight, as will a spectacular fireworks display to light up the night and the start of 2014.
Use MTA Trip Planner to plan your trip.
You’ll line up with thousands of New Year’s Eve revelers—many of them in costume—on the 72nd Street Transverse near Cherry Hill. At the first blast of fireworks that herald the start of 2013, you’ll start your four-mile celebration by heading east, then taking an immediate left turn on East Drive and running north. In the first mile, prepare for a 600-meter climb up Cat Hill—and watch out for its namesake, the Still Hunt statue of a crouching panther, which will look down on you from a rock wall to your left. A friendlier statue will greet you a few hundred meters beyond the one-mile point, along the race’s longest flat section: Fred Lebow, legendary founder of the New York City Marathon, is memorialized in bronze, checking his stopwatch, near East 90th Street.
You’ll continue north on East Drive and enjoy a slight downhill at about 1.5 miles, then another flat section as you approach the 102nd Street Transverse. You’ll turn left there and toast the halfway point with a glass of sparkling cider at an aid station about halfway across the Transverse. Turn left again at the western end of the Transverse and head south on West Drive. You’ll hit a challenging series of three rolling hills between the Transverse and the southwestern edge of the Jacqueline Onassis Reservoir and shortly before the three-mile mark. With a mile to go, you can enjoy a welcome downhill for almost a half-mile, followed by a few hundred meters of flat road and then a final left turn back onto the 72nd Street Transverse. You’ll climb a slight rise and level out toward the finish, which is the same line as your starting point. Happy New Year!
Tip for spectators: A great spot to check out the free fireworks show is just south of 72nd Street.
Located at the Central Park Bandshell, just south of the 72nd Street Transverse, the dance party, featuring a DJ and live performers (electric violin, saxophone, and vocalists), starts at 10 p.m. and keeps going strong until 1 a.m. Runners and non-runners alike are welcome; it’s free and open to the public! Plus, grab some free snacks from Emerald Nuts to fuel your night of fun.
Judging for the costume contest begins at 11 p.m. The theme? The top three places (and prizes) will go to the individual runner or group of runners who dress in the “nuttiest” attire! Check out last year’s winners. The judging will be followed by a procession of costumed runners headed off to the start.
