Club Night is an annual celebration of one of the most dynamic running scenes anywhere in the world. While NYRR events attract world-class fields to marquee events like the ING New York City Marathon and the NYC Half, a corps of local runners, most of them representing clubs based in or near NYC, are pinning on race numbers nearly every weekend of the year to compete in NYRR races on the roads, track, and cross-country trails.
Many of these runners, along with their families and friends, came together on March 7 at the Hard Rock Café to pay tribute to one another and just enjoy the company of friends and friendly rivals. The evening began with an hour of socializing over food and drinks, continued with the awards ceremony, and concluded with dancing.
The top teams of 2012 in 10 different age categories were brought to the stage to receive their well-deserved awards from NYRR President and CEO Mary Wittenberg, Senior Vice President of Event Development and Production Peter Ciaccia, and Club Council liaison Ro Crispin. Groups of proud and happy runners whooped it up and were photographed as their accomplishments were recited and some of their top moments appeared on screens.
Following the presentation of the Special Awards (see story), the Runners of the Year received their awards. All the nominees were announced and the winners were brought to the stage. The presentations culminated with the Fred Lebow Runner of the Year Awards, presented this year to Aliza Aliyu and Mengistu Tabor Nebsi, both of West Side Runners.
A visiting journalist from Japan commented at the end of the evening that he’d never experienced anything quite like Club Night. “All ages of runners were respected,” he said through a translator. “It was great.”
